Living Hive
{6}{G}{G}
Creature -- Elemental
6/6
Trample
Whenever Living Hive deals combat damage to a player, put that many 1/1
green Insect creature tokens into play.

So if, say, Living Hive is blocked by a 2/2 (and 4 trample damage passes
through to the opponent player) how many insect tokens come into play? 1
(cos it damaged the player once) or 4 (cos 4 damage was dealt to the
player)?

TIA.

1 token per point of combat damage dealt directly to the player.

This is a somewhat confusing template R&D has, because they assume you know
what they're talking about when they say "that many" without a viable
antecedent. At least, to a newer player. Whenever you see "that many" in a
sentence, go back earlier in that sentence and see if there's something that
could be counted as a number. So far, there's "(lose or gain) life" and
"(combat) damage". When you see this, mentally put before it "any amount of."
That'll help you see where they're getting "that many" from.

So, in answer to your question, you get 4 tokens, because the Hive dealt 4
damage to the player.

4, because four damage was dealt to the player. "that many" is referring to
the only other possible thing that could be a number in that sentence, the
combat damage amount.

(Yes, it's bad wording, and _ought_ to be "put X 1/1 green Insect tokens into
play, where X was the amount of combat damage dealt to that player". Or
some variant on that that -tells- you outright how much "that many" is -
because combat damage is not itself a pure number, it's _damage_. The +amount+
of damage is a number... Or else it should be worded "Whenever ~ deals an
amount of combat damage...".)

Note that it doesn't get to count any damage dealt to the blocking creature(s)
towards "that many". And damage that gets prevented, of course, wasn't actually
dealt at all...
