I know this is a bit of a silly answer to a small problem but my router isn't the best and needs to be restarted everyday, so I decided to have my desktop bypass the router using a switch (Modem -> Switch -> Router && Desktop). Connecting my modem to a switch then connecting the switch to my router and my desktop gives me a "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration warning on my desktop but my WiFi works fine.

If I only use my router and remove the switch (Modem -> Router -> Desktop) there is no problem, except when I restart my router my desktop losses internet. I have been looking for the cause of this issue with no answer. What is causing this?

Solution

That won't work unless your modem and ISP are set up to give you 2+ IP addresses. What's happening is the router is picking up the IP address assigned to your modem, and your computer gets nothing. The devices connecting via wifi are going through the router, so they work just fine.

I'm not exactly...
hi ,
it should be : Modem > Router > Switch ( if you have many computers )
BTW looks like the conf its not good .

1- Reset your router
2 - Configure the router depend your network ...
3 - Update the router to the latest version
4 - In your computers check if you have the right IP range and same gateway

PS: The switch can have he is own conf (cisco ! )

I'm not exactly sure what the problem you're trying to solve is. So your computer loses connectivity for a minute when you restart the router. Why exactly is that a problem? If you're just trying to avoid a "cable is disconnected" message on your computer (which can reset certain things like file transfers), just plug the switch into the router, instead of the modem. Modem -> router -> switch -> computer. The power to the switch will keep the cable "connected."

Ok that makes sense yeah its just when my router is freaking out I lose internet and it a lot of time to reboot and I'm usually in the middle of something. Looks like I need a new router. Thanks!
