I can't find vlad's stairs. I've looked under boulders, from Jubi's
swamp down, and looked again. Now I need to look some more. Where can
they *not* be? Maybe that would help to know. Can they be on any of
the levels with the wiz's tower? Can they be in orcustown or asmo's
lair?

I found the VS easily, but I can't find the stupid Vlad stairs!

I guess you haven't had a look at

http://www.spod-central.org/~psmith/nh/gazetteer/vlad.html

yet? Dylan's Gazetteer should be the first place to search.

Sure that's easier to find. When a level is undiggable, you know where
to look...

No, I have looked at that. And I think this is my 14th character in
Hell, so I'm pretty used to this.

The spoiler says "between DL34 and DL42", is that still accurate?

And can the upstairs be in lairs or on levels that include the tower? I
honestly cannot remember ever seeing them there.

It says that, and it is still accurate. Moreover, it says: "it is
reached by a second upstair in Gehennom located between the 9th and 13th
levels (and therefore between DL 34 and DL 42)".

The first indication is, of course, much more accurate than the second,
since you have to search only five levels. The Valley is level 1 of
Gehennom.

They can be on *every* level, if I recall correctly. I don't think they
can be in a pre-drawn part of a level, though. So, they can be on a
level containing the wizard's tower, but not in the tower part. They can
be on Orcus' level, but not in the town part, etc. I'm not sure about
Jubilex's level.

I finally found it. I had taken to digging out all of hell. (I know
the stairs can't be on walls, but I was so bored, I just had to keep on
digging.)

So now I have a level 19 elf ranger with 2 magic lamps, AC-49, 511HP, 280Pwr,
a +7 unicorn horn, +7 rustproof pickaxe, +7 Stormbringer, both +7
brands, +6 Longbow, Fooproofed everything (even the bag), spare
everything, genocided L's, MMF's, Cockatrices, Disenchanters, and all
sea life, the bell and the candlestick are both sitting on the VS, and
he's back at this altar camp on DL5.

Situation is too good. I don't trust it one bit.

They can't be on Juiblex's level in any case; the swamp is between 4 and
7 of Gehennom, the upstairs between 9 and 13. They can't be in with the
Wizard's fake towers, either, or with Asmodee. They can be on
Baalzebub's (just; his range ends at 9) or the real Tower (three levels,
11 to 18); most likely is Orcus, between 10 and 15.

Juiblex' level falls outside the relevant range (it being G4-G7),
as does Asmodeus' level. The entries in the Gazetteer for Baalzebub's
and Orcus' levels and the Wizard's tower levels all state clearly that
the stairs to Vlad's Tower may be present; as Boudewijn notes, only
in a mazy bit and not a fixed-layout bit.

They certainly can be in Orcus Town.

Well, strictly speaking, no. They can be on Orcus's level, but only in
the non-Town part, IIRC.

By the way, David, would you mind adding a space after the ">" you use
as a quoting character? It would make your messages easier to read.
