I know this has been talked about already...but I'm not sure what conclusion
anyone came to...

Anyway I was playing around with Garry's Mod tonight and spawned a gas
pump...

With Kron, Summa and Volym written on it....and it seems that this is
Swedish....

It's a mish-mash of different European countries. I've seen Greek and
Russian lettering there too.

I remember reading an interview with either Gabe Newell or one of the
designers, and they said that they were looking for a eastern-european
setting for HL2, but not any specific place that exists today.

It's supposed to be Eastern European, is it not? (The city, not the
language).

Of course it ought to be possible for someone with local knowledge to
recognise the aerial/satellite image that is visible from the tower near the
end of the game. Has anyone tried that?

You'd have thought it would be simpler to look for a city with a bloody
great metal tower in the middle of it. 😉

The blurbs implied that it was a former city in Russia.

They wanted to set it in an Eastern European city, and realistically
portrayed a future city there. The little amount of people that you
encounter is an accurate reflection of the population, now that all the
people from there now live in Britain.

It looks to me like the view from the Space Needle in Seattle,
Washington. Which is around where Valve is located.

An eastern european ex of mine showed no interest in living here, and having
spent a fair amount of time in Prague I have to say it's only inertia and my
inability to master a foreign language that keep me in Coventry.

Of course there weren't Striders there then.

About the satellite image? Sure, though only out of idle curiosity, not out
of any burning desire to know or to attach any real significance to it. I
suppose the best thing to ask would be a cruise missile.

From Planet Half-Life:

"
Gordon Freeman is back! Along with scientist Eli Vance and his
daughter Alyx, your mission is to save the world from total alien
domination. See, that little incident in Black Mesa was just the
beginning: now those pesky Xen invaders and a new threat called the
Combine have spread across the whole Earth, causing massive amounts of
death and destruction. It’s up to you to set things right. Half-Life 2
picks up some time after the original Half-Life left off - with Gordon
working for the G-Man - and takes place in and around a Russian city
called City 17. "

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with
the intention of arriving safely in an attractive
and well preserved body, but rather to skid in
sideways, cigarette in one hand, favorite beverage in
the other, between the legs of a hot lady, body
thoroughly used up, totally worn out,and screaming
WOO HOO - What a Ride!"

I didn't compose this but I love it!!!

Yeah I haven't met any Czechs yet at all, but I've met a few Latvians, quite
a few Lithuanians, one Estonian and a huge amount of Polish. 100,000 have
arrived on British shores and counting.

I think I can see where you're heading with this, but I'm not going to rise
to it. It just makes me sad, really.

That could be any of what, six states? 😛
That's counting only the US of course by your criteria.

That and trying to get off the ring-road.

(I used to live near Coventry)
There's a rumour that the sewers in the original Italian Job were
actually filmed in the Cov ring road.

It's not a rumour, it's true, though the sewers have nothing to do with the
ring road!
