Lockdowns, security and books

Quick question - if I lock down a book in my public house, do I have to set
security to 'anyone' on that book to allow visitors to read it?
Also, are there differences between the different coloured books? I've got
red, purple and brown ones. Someone mentioned something about red or orange
leaves, too, but I'm not sure what to do with them, or even if I need them.

Thanks!

Well, I can answer about the red leaves. They seal the book's printing, so
that nobody can change what it says. (Orange petals are for short-term
poison resistance.) I think you do have to set the security clearance for
who will be allowed to read the book. Don't quote me on that, though - I
can't test it, as my main shard is down right now...

Great - thanks, both of you!
Now, how about runebooks? Do I have to set security on them, too, or will
that allow anyone to drop runes from the books?
Also, is there any value at all to having any of the spell/class books
(paladins, bushido, etc) locked down and available in my house? Or will they
be mere decor until I release them and put them in my backpack?
Also, does anyone know what the differences between the colours of books
are?
At a closer look, I seem to have...
small red books
medium/large purple books
light brown/beige books (mostly with standard stories in)
dark brown books(also with standard stories in)
are there any others? There doesn't seem to be a wealth of information on
book anywhere on stratics - or perhaps I need glasses...

Thanks!

And your Answers!

Red books, 20 pages
Purple, 40 pages (I've already filled 6 of them! Whoot!)
Brown, System books with UO stories.

Rune books can be used locked down. Security is for who can remove runes.
Set book to owner on security and only you can modify them, but everyone can
use them. IF their are charges in the book anyone who can access it can use
up your charges. So leave the charges empty.

Mage, Pally, and Necro books do nothing for you when locked down. All must
be in your backpack to be of use.

Red leaves are used to seal books. If you don't want the l33t dipshit
changing or adding to books you put out for deco then seal them to prevent
that. Most shards have vendors that sell red leaves if'n you don't want to
mess with growing the plants.

Which reminds me, has anyone here ever added anything to the

Looks like they changed this around somewhat as well. You do need to set
the security of Runebooks that are locked down. People with access can
add and remove the runes now, before you had to unlock them to do that. I
don't know what the default security level is or if it lets everyone
add/drop runes.

Hehe, I spent the last few hours running around the Takuno Islands and
never have I seen so many ghosts or ghost pets for that matter. I guess
people are having fun with some tougher spawn on the surface for once. I
used up a lot of bandages resurrecting...

I imagine they would be just decor. Like the magician, necromancer, and
paladin books, you need them in your pack to use them.

Initially they were just different colors. Once the housing patch came in
and you could lock stuff down, only one kind could be written in - dark
red? They've probably changed it by now though.

You can write in all three types now unless they have been sealed.

Thank you, everyone! Wow. This could easily get confusing - and the worrying
thing is, I wonder how many rune libraries have lost runes this way?

Hmmm.... growing red leaves.... I haven't tried growing anything except
skills yet - might give that a try!

So, just to confirm - I need to use red leaves on red and purple books, and
set the security to 'everyone' if I want people to read the contents in my
public house?
Still a bit worried about how secure runebooks are... If I'm going to bother
creating a rune library, I don't want to lose everything. Maybe if I just
lock down runestones in secure containers instead...

K, for books on display, seal them with Red leaves and security to everyone
after you lock them.

For Runebooks, no charges, and security to owner

That'll do what you want. If you want more reassurance have a friend try to
take the runes to see if it works. (Use copies for that 'test' runebook if
you need to)

If you lock runes down instead of runebooks you will run out of secure
lockdowns quick.
