From my old days I remember it as part of delivery mission given by NPC: in
first part you go and find some "agent" or such in the wilderness, then
this NPC gives you briefcase which you have to deliver back to the city. I
remember this mission to be severely broken. The second waypoint
(briefcase delivery) being seemingly on the roof of some guild hall (not
the player one, I'm talking about July last year).
I just destroyed the briefcase in the end.

If that is the case then it makes for a great decoration in a house :)

One with almost no whining and overall good to read. Perhaps, because
people choose ranger for roleplaying - it's largely useless otherwise.
Master rangers are what jedi supposed to be: rare, almost considered a myth
;-)

SOE. I read Ranger, Scout, and In Testing there only. Everything else is
a pain %(

I use SOE for a single reason - no additional registration is required.
So, no forums on other sites for me. Of course, USENET is still the best!

as a former Master Ranger, I can tell you why they are rare. The skills
are mostly useless. Tracking is the only one I saved from that profession.

Isn't that exactly what I said above (second sentence)?

Actually, depending on combat profession you chose, traps may be somewhat
useful as they allow to apply states that are not otherwise achievable. I
use traps with my pistol. I know that ranger-pikeman and ranger-fencer
consider traps useful too. At least until you have mastered your combat
profession.

Even tracking isn't that useful when you consider the limitations.
- It doesn't show lairs
- It doesn't show spawns that are there but haven't been activated
by somebody walking by
- It is slow (although they did speed it up some)

Overall, Ranger is almost completely useless. Even at Master you barely
get an increase over Master Scout with concern to harvesting. A Scout
(not even master) that has a faster combat profession can harvest a lot
more in a shorter time than a Master Ranger (who is limited in their
choices because of all the skill points required for Ranger).

Ranger is one of the most fun professions (I've been a Master at least
four times on two different characters), but I ended up dropping Master
Ranger and picking up Virtuoso as more useful to my main :/
