hey i just read in another forum that his barton was locked it was a 2500 but i thought they were all unlocked. if its locked that means you cant mess with the multiplier right? how do you know if it is locked b4 you buy the chip? are the 64 locked etc? sorry just trying to get into overclocking and so just stating out with some basics

All the Bartons produced after October of 2003 are locked. Only the Mobile chips are still unlocked. The A-64's are locked on the high side. You can still lower the multiple and raise your buss speed to compensate.

Abit IS7 - 3.0C @ 3.6ghz - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - Yellowtail Merlot

Yes all the mobiles are still unlocked. However, keep in mind that even "locked" chips can be overclocked. You just can't change the mulipliers and such, bus speeds can still be changed.

My 2800+ XP, obivsuly "locked," runs 2.6 ghz, on air cooling.

Increase voltage to the core, and increase your FSB. Presto, your now overclocked. For someone without a lot of overclocking expeirence, it's a little easier than messing with multipliers and such.

Anyways, that still a 520 mhz overclock, on my "locked" chip. Not bad for an AMD chip, obvisuly other unlocked chips are generally a little better overclockers, but even a regular XP chip, still has potential.
