Hi Everyone,

After updating to windows 8.1 about a year ago, I noticed that when I boot up my laptop, the lock screen image doesn't show however when waking from sleep and hibernation, it does. If I have a slideshow playing, I also notice that some pictures are not shown but a black image that is replaced by the next image in the slideshow. It also shows the clock, wi-fi and ease of access symbols as well as the power and battery symbol are shown. The power and ease of access symbol are not supposed to be shown as they only appear after you slide up on the lock screen however they overlap with the other symbols as if they are transparent.

My specs are as follows:
i5-2450M
AMD Radeon HD 6490M (7400 series)
1TB HDD
7GB Sandisk iSSD (cache SSD)
1600x900 Display

I've tried multiple things including oving my images to my local hard drive from OneDrive and re-installing my Intel and AMD drivers however it hasn't worked. Searching on Google only comes up with results on how to change the image which I already know how to do.

Although this is a minor issue, it is just something that annoys me so if anyone has a solution please share it.

Thanks

Hi F22attack,

Which version of Windows 8.1 are you running (Pro, RT, Standard, Enterprise)?

I can replicate the lock screen picture issue on both a Windows 8.1 "Pro" and "Standard" machines (desktops, not laptops). Though the results were not consistent on the "Standard" machine.

This is also something I had noticed a while back, however I didn't spend much time trying to figure it out then. At that time I noticed that Windows ignores my lock screen picture selection during shutdown and restart. However, while my machine is "running" and if I lock the screen, it does not ignore my lock screen picture selection.

Interestingly enough and (perhaps) completely seperate from this, I was playing around with turning off hibernation early today. When I first started trying to replicate your issue, I noticed that I could not. It just worked. I would always see the lock screen picture that I selected under PC Settings. No matter if I shutdown or restarted the computer. After a few attempts, it was then I remembered that I had turned hibernation off.

Naturally I turned it back on and shutdown my computer. When it started back up again, it showed another picture. Not the one I had selected.

Turned hibernation back off and tried again. It worked again, showing my picture selection.

This seems silly, especially when hibernation in Windows 8 does more than it previously did (apparently also allowing for faster boot times).

At this point I have three guesses:

A) It's late and I am somehow linking hibernation and the lock screen picture
B) There is another setting or registry entry somewhere that allows hibernation and custom lock screen pictures to play nicely (see Side Note below)
C) It's a bug in Windows 8

Side note: If you are running the "Pro" version of Windows 8.1, there is a setting in the Group Policy Editor that seems to allow you to force the system to always display your custom picture on the logon screen, however it is labeled as only supporting Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7.

I am NOT recommending turning on / off hibernation, however maybe someone else has some more insight into this.

Solution

Hi gamrtech! Thanks for trying to help me with this problem. I am running Windows 8.1 Pro which is genuine and not cracked. I will try the hibernation fix you suggested and see if it works.

Thanks
