So who's been able to accomplish this? I've obtained a program called
Cedega that allowed me to install D2, but the LOD install does not see it.
(Tells me I have to install D2 first :-/) CrossOver Office didn't work
either.

So... if you've been playing LOD on a Linux box, I'd appreciate knowing
how you did it.

This is Mandrake 10.0.

I haven't installed it myself, but i remember a thread here where a
couple had it installed.
And i think wine or cedaga is wath they used.
You can try look at http://www.transgaming.com/ for tips and tricks, i
know d2 lod should work with cedega.

I personally, don't use Linux yet but I know at least nine people who're
running LOD under Wine.

I'm a Linux only user and never had serious problems with installing LoD.
Cedega is the right software for you. I'm using WineX3 the predecessor of
Cedega.

ok, guess I'll just have to keep tinkering with it then. Thanks to all who
replied.

Any recommendations/suggestions based on your experience with Cedega/LOD?
Like, how to get the LOD disk to see the D2 installation?

I hadn't much time when I wrote my first reply.
This is the more informative version :)

Following works for me.

When installing don't call SETUP.EXE but INSTALL.EXE to
prevent trouble with unmounting the CD

~$winex /cdrom/INSTALL.EXE

After D2 was installed I upgraded it to 1.09 using the patch
from blizzards ftp site. They fixed some bugs with the cd
protection. Also D2 is searching for the CD-Drive with the
CD in it. This means Blizzard allows users to add a second
harddisk and assign a new driveletter to the CD Drive ;-)

Then same procedure for LoD
~$winex /cdrom/INSTALL.EXE

To start LoD I call the game.exe, not the Diablo II.exe

You wrote you installed D2 with cedega, but not if you are
able to play D2.
Check your registry files (~/.transgaming/user.reg and
~/.transgaming/system.reg) if the installation path to your
D2 directory is correct. I'm sure the LoD installer searches a
D2 installation in this directory and complains when the
directory does not exist or is read/write protected.

Yeah, D2 will start up, albeit in a corner of one of my monitors, but I'll
worry about video configuration later. Right now I just want to get LOD
installed.

In fact I've already downloaded 1.10 patch, just to see if it'd do it. So
I have D2 v1.10 but no LOD.

I'm actually using "cedega install.exe" btw. My console doesn't know
"winex". Why on earth doesn't LOD see D2 installed??

(frustrating!)

If <Ctrl><Alt><-> doesn't decrease your screen resolution you have to
configure your XServer to support 640x480 and 800x600.
for me it's /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

BTW: the '-' key on the Numpad is meant. <Ctrl><Alt><+> should increase
the resolution.

This means that D2 is correct installed, because the upgrader found
everthing.

>I'm actually using "cedega install.exe" btw.

You don't need to change any CDs to install LoD, so Setup.exe should do the
job too. Give setup.exe a try.

>My console doesn't know "winex".
No problem. It's just another name for (almost) the same software.

>Why on earth doesn't LOD see D2 installed??
If setup.exe doesent work too, go to http://transgaming.org/forum/
They have a forum for Diablo2.

I forgot ...
Copy the d2music.mpg from the D2 CD to your D2 directory before
you try to install LoD via setup.exe.

good luck

ahhhhhh THAT's tha ticket!!!

Thank you sir!

Deleted D2 directory, reinstalled, this made LOD see D2 again. Then tried
LOD install, but as usual it stopped after a while and said to insert the
Play Disc. Which, of course, was already in the drive. :-/
This is what screwed me up the first time.
Copying d2music over first eliminated this problem and install proceeded
normally.

Now to get the video straight, but first:

I just now started the game in a window (-w), and when i moved my mouse
away to type here, the window minimized just as it does in Windows... but
there's no button on my taskbar! hehehe I can hear the music playing but I
can't see the game anywhere. This ever happen to you, if so, what'd you do
about it?

Glad to hear it went well :)

This happens to everybody who trys to run D2 in windowed mode on Linux ;-))
Ther's no commonly known way to get the hidden window back on the screen.
But you can kill the processes with 'killall wine' or maybe 'killall cedega'
Fullscreen mode is the only playable way.
And after you configured your XServer to support 800x600, it's really
fullscreen ;-)
