When I type in my password to enter my computer, I get a message that says "The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User Profile cannot be loaded."

Solution
That will work! As long as you can get it plugged into another PC i can walk you though on what to change in the registry to get you back up and running.

I have an internal HD and an external HD so I can unplug the external HD and plug it into another PC easy enough. Will that work? I suppose I can do the internal HD although I have never done this before. I have 2 PCs here and they are both Dells but different models. Thanks for replying!

OK I removed the ext HD from the Log on Problem Computer (LOPC) and have plugged it in to the working computer (WC) through a USB port on the front of the WC. What's next? (do you have time today to do this? Not sure what time zone you are in. As for me, I'll be here as long as it takes!!) Again Thanks!!

Ok so now your booted on the working PC and the one that isn't working is plugged in though a USB adapter.

So now you want to click on start and then if you are running XP click on Run if not then click on the Search Box at the bottom. Type in

Regedit

You will get the registry editor.

Click on the

HKEY_USERS

Once it is highlighted click On File and Load Hive. Then Browse to the hard drive of the PC with the logon problems and go to the Windows --> System32 --> Config --> and click on the SOFTWARE file

It will ask you to give it a name. Just name it Software for now.

Once that is load you will see the Software under the HKEY_USERS. You want to go to

Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

In there you should see some stuff that says like.

S-1-5-18, S-1-5-19 ect.

There should be one that says like S-1-5-and has a log of number on it and then a dublicate one that has a .bak on it.

example. I will use these number but they won't match your PC. Just examples.

S-1-5-21-886963545-3998060746-1274030617-1001
S-1-5-21-886963545-3998060746-1274030617-1001.bak

Right click on the first one and click rename and at the end of it add a .ba so it looks like

S-1-5-21-886963545-3998060746-1274030617-1001.ba

then right click on the S-1-5-21-886963545-3998060746-1274030617-1001.bak and click rename and then DELETE ONLY THE .BAK so it looks like

S-1-5-21-886963545-3998060746-1274030617-1001

Once you do that double click on S-1-5-21-886963545-3998060746-1274030617-1001. On the right side there should be something that says

RefCount

Double click on that. Windows will pop up. What ever it is change it so a 0.

Once this is all done go back up to the SOFTWARE part and highlight that. The one you added. Then click on File and Unload Hive.

Toss it back into your computer and try logging in!

OK but just to be sure we are on the same page ,,,,it is windows 7 and I only have the ext HD that I use for backing up data off the LOPC and that is is plugged into the WC........so these changes will work? Also if it is easier to call me and talk direct my umber is 505-828-9884. Thanks Doc! PJE

Ok so you have the Non working PC, the working PC, and an external hard drive correct? The external hard drive has nothing to do with this. What you want to do is open up the non working PC, remove the hard drive, turn off the working PC, connect the non working PC hard drive into power and into a SATA connector on the motherboard. Then turn it back on and follow those steps

OK Thanks. That makes more sense. Appreciate your time. cheers

OK Doc so I was able to log on to the non-working PC directly in Safe mode and I got all the way down on your list to Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ but there is no profile list located below there! I guess that's my problem and why it can't load the user profile when I sign in with my correct password. Any ideas what I can do now? PJE5

I am on another computer sending these emails so not sure how I would attach it to this email. Also, I hate to close off the non-working computer to reboot in safe mode as safe mode in windows 7 is not all that easy to get to as it only shows F2 and F12 as possibilities and I am not sure how I even did it last time as I tried about 20 times before I was able to finally get it in safe mode. Sorry this is such a pain. Is there anyway else to convey the information on the screen to you?

Turn off the PC. Then right when you turn it on press F8. you probably got to the screen because you shut it off while windows was trying to load.

It would just be easier if you could remove the hard drive and plug it in to the other working PC than having to deal with this one. But try it anyways
