I bought a used 5.1 system for my PC and everything was fine until I tried it out. The bass knob basically works as an on and off switch for the sub, it's either full bass or no bass, this is a huge problem for me as I live in an apartment building. I was wondering if anyone knows of a free equalizer that I can download. Using that to reduce the bass is probably my best option. Also, I must mention that this is somewhat motherboard related as I need help plugging the headphone jack into my desktop. ;-)

Solution
It depends a little on where the crossover frequency of the sub is set - but the frequency you want to lower would be from 20Hz to maybe 50Hz, somethinng in that area. You can move up or down a little in the frequencies you reduce, to find a sweetspot for your specific setup.

I don't have huge amounts of experience with PC speaker setups, as I have only ever worked with live concerts, but in a very simplified way - the lower the Hz, the deeper the sound. Anything below 20Hz is generally considered inaudible (to the human ear), and the same goes for 20.000Hz or above

EDIT: If you can find out the crossover frequency of the sub somewhere, just reduce the frequencies below the crossover point, to primarely adjust the sound for the sub...
