Never used a gaming mouse before, so help me choose.

And most importantly - What do the extra buttons do? What command can I assign for them?

What extra buttons? If you go with something like a logitech 502, the extra buttons can be assigned a huge list of things, from double click to windows commands (cortana, action center, etc) to a page of text!
