the Logitech z906 has 500 watts of power. DO you really need a soundcard?

Yes you need at least a 5.1 channel soundcard to get the full features of this sound system.

watts of power has nothing to do with weather or not you need a sound card. it has some influence over the volume dB that can be produced by the speakers, while also having to take into account what the continuous undistorted output is, the frequency that power is rated for, and the efficiency of the speakers.

If you have onboard sound that is capable of 5.1 analog sound output then they will work fine with it. Some sound cards produce better sound quality and may have other features you may want. They are also less prone to humming/buzzing interference that most on-board sound will produce to some extent, some are really bad.
