1) "lesser FSB frequency" -- <b>BZZZZT!</b> The Athlon64 was crippled with less bandwidth in this case, partly because it only had a single-channel memory controller, and partly because it got stuck with slow PC2100 SO-DIMMs.

2) The Pentium-M in the Dell laptop was a Banias CPU, a beefed-up Pentium 3 core designed for high IPC at the expense of clock scaling. The core will likely never see 2GHz until a 90nm shrink (a la Dothan). If it was a P4-M, then AMD could be ashamed of not beating it completely senseless, but that wasn't the case.

3) Despite the other crippling inflicted on it, the Athlon64 only really fell behind when powersaving was turned up to the max. So the only legit detail you have to troll with is that a prototype or very-early-production unit didn't have its power management properly worked out. That's not a lot to go on, kimosabi.

My own beast: Athlon 2700xp+ (oc: 3200xp+ with 200fsb) , Radeon 9800pro (oc: 410/370) , 512mb ddr400. SO MUCH faster than my last computer (pIII 550......)

Since they are talking about Laptop CPU variants in the post everything drops down to a very basic issue and that issue is heat dissipation.

Both Intel and AMD mod Laptop CPU's to function in such a manner that the CPU's run many power saving options.

I could not fault either Intel or AMD for any applications in laptop design. It is still the leading edge in Engineering design efforts to make a computer as small as a laptop function correctly. Under very specific design constraints do to size, battery life and heat management.

If this is some dumb marketing ploy by AMD, then they need to fire their marketing crew. They did this with the bartons and now they are doing this with the 64. They lower the clock but make the claim that its better. Dont even waste your money with the 64 3000 and 64 3200. The only one that kinda worth it is the 64 FX which is patheticly expensive. I dont care if its 64bit architecture, should have had a MUCH higher clock like at least 2.5ghz to make it worthy.

They need to drop the marketing trickery and put some swesome rawpower out there or intel will continue to smoother them. Ive been an AMD fan all the way up to the Bartons but Id tell ya now my next system would most likely be and intel system over the AMD64.
