Hi all,

As we know, there is only a certain limited number of characters that a folder or file name can have.

Let us say I have a folder on a desktop and inside that folder is another folder and so on. This desktop folder itself has a long folder name. Each folder has significant long names, therefore the file [e.g. Ms Word file or Excel file etc.] inside the final folder will have a fairly long root path or root address. I have a lot of items in the final folder and I keep adding items.

I right clicked on the orginal folder on the desptop and selected Properties to view the total folder size and to see the number of files and folders it contained and I recorded those values. I then changed the desktop folder name to a much shorter folder name and rechecked the size and number of folders/files it contained, and to my surprise, the the folder size increased and the folder/file count increased. As a test, I renamed the desktop folder to the original folder name and on checking the values, the folder size and file count were all at the original reduced values.

My question is, is there any way that items in the final end root folder can be deleted due to a long file name in the preceding root folders? From my text and experiment above, I don't think that my files are being deleted because switching from a long folder name to a shorter name made the size and folder count return.

This might sound a long and tedious process but I suggest you create a folder, name it "Shortened filenames" or similar, then take each individual file you want to keep and copy it then paste it into the new folder. That way, all the other folder names in the path will no longer threaten your file with a long path message. Do the same for all those files then delete the originals.
