So I get an intial post (one quick beep), I get vid card info on screen, then "Grub can't start". Of course grub can't start, it's a recycled 500g SATA HD.

Hello all-

I'm new to the forum, but don't consider myself a total noob... I've been building systems from scratch since the late '90s.

I bought a nice ATX case a while back, and when I upgrade, it generally entails mobo, cpu and ram. This time I also upgraded to a new 600w power supply and PCI express video card.

For upwards of 10 years now, I've had great experience with newegg.com, and all new components came from there, I still have roughly 3 weeks on my 30 day Newegg return policy for these parts.

I bought:

ASRock M3A770DE AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard

AMD Athlon II X3 445 Rana 3.1GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Desktop Processor ADX445WFGMBOX

CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 V2 600W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

JATON VIDEO-PX558-DT GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 64-bit DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card

Yeah!

So I get an intial post (one quick beep), I get vid card info on screen, then "Grub can't start". Of course grub can't start, it's a recycled 500g SATA HD.

Reboot, F2 to enter the BIOS, change to "boot cd first", and PCI express first. F10 to save and exit.

It works. I put the windows XP disc into the drive, and begin the install. 40 minutes left... ok....go sit on the couch for a while, 29 minutes left. ok.. make a sandwich... 12 minutes left... cool...

Come back again and "12 minutes" left. Mouse frozen. ctrl-alt-dlt no response. Hard reset by holding power button.

No Post. (NO BEEP. All fans spin up (cpu, vidcard, case fans) all spin up)

Remove vid card, no post.
remove ram. no post.

Double check everything, removing everything besides CPU and its fan. No beep.

Remove entire mobo. of 7 holes, I have 4 with correct standoffs and screws; two with nylon standoffs, and one empty. That should be enough ground..

So that's where I am right now. All new system, it posted, beeped, got 75% trhough windows install, then froze.

So far:

I've removed vid card, fans spin up, no beep
removed ram, fans spin up, no beep.
removed HD and CD, fans spin up, no beep.

removed cpu and cooler, (incedentally the cpu was stuck to the heatsink and they came off as one piece, and the little cpu lockdown thing came up, freeing the cpu which was STUCK to the heat sink.

Cleaned the cpu and heatsink again, polishing down to shiny metal., added new "arctic silver 5", followed instructions.

No post. Fans spin up.

FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Edit: forgot to mention that I also reset the CMOS via jumper and no love
