The only parts that fail over time are hard drives, because they are mechanical, generally if you got 5 years out of one you got your moneys worth, but they can and do last far longer in some cases.

On the other hand CPUs, memory, etc can effectively last forever. Long enough that its obsolete before it would ever fail.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with running your PC 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Longevity of PCs is insanely huge. Go to your local library, those ancient rigs have been on insane amounts of time. Any business with a server, every single NAS out there, they are all on 24/7. Cash registers last INSANE amounts of time. Electronics are very very robust.

I have a Pentium 4 system from 2001 that saw heavy use, it was my first computer when I was younger and went through a lot of abuse. I even had it overcloked for a few years. Still works great, my little cousin does her homework on it, believe it or not I got windows 8.1 on it, and its works just fine for browsing the web and using ms word. Clean out the dust every once and a while and make sure everything is staying cool and it will last a good long time. Heat is the number one killer of electronics.

If you read the 'WARRANTY' Card on the parts they are commonly up to 3 years only on parts, based on the business model of 5 days a week 8 hours per day use. That also is because businesses can't put 'off' if the computer fails as it is used to make the company money, each day it isn't usable is a day's income lost. For consumers (you me etc.) we push it to 5 years as by that time numerous 'common things' are incompatible (floppy disks no longer sold, software not compatible, new devices can't be used, etc.) and forces the change though the computer 'still working'. But consumers run the risk till it 'just won't turn on anymore' before they decide they replace it (waiting for the problem to happen before dealing with it).

Using it a couple hours less or more won't do much to the 'life', as still other things factor in; power failures / spikes damaging them, spills of food and drink, the dog / cat hair clogging it up, etc. etc. etc.
