Solution
All wifi is bad for gaming. Adding a extender creates a second interfering signal that causes even more problems for games. Other than games extenders just reduce your speed.

If it is worked ok for you buy the same brand as the one the broke. wifi is very strange some units work better in certain houses than others with no way to predict. This is why you see such mixed reviews on all wifi equipment.

The key to extender working is placement. It needs to be placed where can get strong signal from the main router but still deliver signal to the are without coverage.

If you are going to spend money you may want to consider powerline networks. These appear as a ethernet cord over your electical outlets. You can get units...

Unfortunately the units with wifi are over your price point. You want units that say AV2 in the name these are the newer technology and tend to work a bit better.

The wire is always faster than the wireless. More secure amd less errors too. Not all extenders slow down the wifi connection speed though the standard approach will basically cut wifi speeds in half. But it is possible to configure some repeaters and extenders to "NOT" do this, generally it should be at least a dual band extender or the repeater must be dedicated to the signal it is repeating and any clients will need to connecct to the repeater via a wire rather than through the same wifi radio that is doing the 'extending'.
