Looking at buying win 8.1 unsure on the terms and cons that apply

Some shops are telling me that like windows 7 you need to buy a new system just to get your hands on a copy of windows 8.1 and other's are saying you can buy it without needing to spend $600+ on a new system,

So I am confused with the rules on what is the truth and not the truth on this matter,

Or is there a place I can buy a key for windows 8.1 online and just use it costing me half the price !?

You can buy it on its own (retail version) or with a pc (oem version).

There's no difference between them

You do not need to buy a new computer to get Windows 8.x. You can buy Windows 8 at many on-line retailers, such as Amazon.com and Newegg.com, among many others.

However, you won't find any at half price. You will occasionally find it on sale for 10% off, but there is no way to buy it at half price.

I personally don't like windows 8/8.1.

Basically you can either buy a PC with windows or just buy windows on it's own. You're not forced to buy a PC with windows.
