Specs:

OS: Windows 10 64 Bit
CPU: AMD FX 4300 3.8Ghz Quad Core
GPU: MSI GeForge GTX 960
Mobo: MSI 760GM P23
RAM: 8GB 1 stick - Kingston
HDD: 1TB WD Blue
PSU: ATX, 500 W

So, my GPU has died and I'm looking at upgrading to a GTX 1060 but I am unsure of two things:

1. Is it likely I will need to upgrade my CPU? I feel as though my CPU will severely bottleneck the performance of my GPU in certain games. If upgrading what would you recommend based on the specs provided?

If I need to upgrade my CPU I was looking at an i5 2500k but I dont want to spend more than £150 on a CPU... Is that too low?

2. Are these parts compatible together and with my motherboard? Will I need to buy a new motherboard as well?

I want to know the total costs before looking at purchasing anything, so any help from anybody would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Shouldn't be much of a bottleneck with your CPU and the 1060 - Maybe some with really graphic intensive games but you should be fine playing most games on high settings without issues. My 10 year old Q6600 works with the 1050 TI without much hiccup, and your CPU is newer than mine.

- That's just my opinion though. Everyone has their own, and a lot of people are a lot more knowledgeable here than i am with these things.

The 2500k is infinitely better than an FX 4300

, and yes your FX will bottleneck a 960 but not massively. It wont stand a chance with a 1060 tho.
If you are buying a 2500k you'll need to get a new board too (you cant use an Intel chip in an AMD socket...), but if that's the case, get a newer chip for the same price like the i5 6500 or a 4460 if you want to keep your DDR3 RAM.
