Hey y'all,

My 2014 Mac mini with a dual core i7 and 8GB of RAM just isn't cutting it anymore for what I'm using it for. Recently, the older cheese grater Mac Pros have caught my attention. I'm wondering what specs should be prioritized and what would be overkill.
I do a lot of music production, but I also do photo editing in Lightroom and Photoshop, as well as video editing and production in Premiere Pro. I'm not doing any gaming - I have a built dedicated PC for that. What should I be looking for? I've currently found one for $775 with a Xeon X5690, 32GB of DDR3 ECC, 1 TB HDD, and an RX 580. Is it a good buy? I'm starting to wonder if the RX 580 is overkill for what I'm using it for but I'd like to know. But would something like an old Radeon HD 5770 be too little?

Thanks.

I'm not sure if I'm getting this right... but you wanna get a used Mac Pro...? DO NOT do that. Just get a new one.
  • 3.5GHz 8‑core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
  • 32GB (4x8GB) of DDR4 ECC memory
  • Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB of GDDR5 memory
  • 1TB SSD storage

I'm sorry, but that is WAY out my budget. That money is better spent on something else like my car. Not to mention depreciation as it gets older.

I don't want to spend any more than $1000 on a replacement Mac. An older Mac Pro seems like a great alternative as it's faster, cheaper, and should get the job done for years to come.
