Hi guys,
I've decided to build a new CPU and I need some help. I already have 4x2 GB RAM, an optical drive and a 1 TB HDD.
My above mentioned budget is only for the rest of the components, i.e A Motherboard, Graphics Card, Processor, Cabinet, Sound Card and PSU. Also any other essential parts I might have missed out.
I'm currently running a Dell XPS 8300 and I'm planning to salvage any good usable parts. I need a system which can run the latest games and for extended periods of time since I spend 8+ hours a day on my computer.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thank you :)

Solution

Thank you but I don't think you understood my query. I am looking to build a whole new system. I just want to use my old RAM, HDD and Optical drive. I just mentioned that so it could be excluded from my budget. Hope you can help.

Thank you so much :) Is a core i5 at 3.1 GHz sufficient thought? Also can you please give me the name of the website you used to get the prices of these products?

No you didn't

😀

Jokes aside, you really should check what CPU and motherboard you have, your current PC can have great CPU inside, like the i7-2600. In this case you should not buy a new CPU, it would be a wast of money if you do it, and you will probably will downgrade and not upgrade your CPU.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-2600+%40+3.40GHz
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-4440+%40+3.10GHz&id=2017

But, you can always get an i5-4440 and send me you old and weak i7-2600. I will give you 1000 rupees for it, 1000!!

Hahaha my current processor is a i5-2320 @ 3.0 Ghz (2nd gen). I'm not sure about the motherboard I'm currently using. I do know that it is the stock motherboard for the Dell XPS 8300.

There is no reason to buy a new CPU and most likely no reason to buy a new motherboard.

Unless you want to do something else with the rest of your current computer, you should only buy a new GPU, more ram and, maybe, a new PSU, the improvement you will have, even with an i7-4790k would be very marginal, hence not worth.

Thank you :) That sounds like a good idea!
I've decided to go with the following setup:
-My old RAM (8GB DDR3)
-My old CPU (Core i5-2320 @ 3 Ghz)
-Gigabyte Ga-h97m-d3h Motherboard
-Seasonic 620 W Modular Power Supply
-Zotac Nvidia GeForce GTX 970
-Cooler Master K380 CPU Cabinet

Will it work? 😀

No, that motherboard will not work with your old CPU, only a LGA 1155 will work with that CPU.

Is there a specific reason you want to change the motherboard, I think you should keep the one you have if you don't have any reason to change it.

If you are set to change the motherboard you can search for: z87, H87 or b75:

Can you link the GPU you want to buy?

You could save some money by keeping the case, plus if you do so you will not have to unmount the board or the CPU from it. But make sure the GPU will fit, if not, get a new one (the case you selected seems to be a decent one taking in to account the ones available to you - you probably know it already, but it has a lower price at http://www.snapdeal.com/). The PSU seems to fit your current case, but it will be drawing air from inside the case. So if you decide to keep the case, you should check how hot your CPU normally gets - if it gets more then 50ºC you might want to buy a new CPU cooler so the PSU does not receive too much hot air from CPU. If this are too many "ifs" just get a new case :)
