I have currently a GS108T switch. Running out of ports. Therefore I am looking at the 16 port version. I don't think there is a similar managed switch. Maybe GS716Tv3 or GS516TP? Both both are a bit bulky for my home use.
Is the GS116Ev2 the logical choice? However, I do believe I loose PoE. Not using PoE currently, but it was nice to know that there is at least one PoE port, just in case.

If you do not need PoE today and your current switch has PoE you can just save it until you need the PoE function. You can just plug the 8 port switch into the 16 and use the 8 port one for PoE purposes in the future. In theory you would have a 1gig bottleneck between the switches but if that is a issue you have a rather strange data flow for a home user.

buffers should not matter a lot. In theory there should never be a queue on a port so it should only need a 1 packet buffer in and out. Now if you were to get large queues on a port it indicates you have a poor design since you are overloading a device. Even if the port can buffer the data the end device likely has a problem actually processing it.

If a end device can handle the stream a switch can.

Almost all switches you find on the market are what is called wirespeed or nonblocking. This means they can send 1g and receive 1g on every port all at the same time. This means a switch should never be a bottlneck
