Hello everyone, here's my situation.
I recently upgraded via the microcenter bundle I learned about from the gaming CPU reviews on here . Love it so far, but my 1060 6GB is now looking long in the tooth. I had bought it for 1080p gaming but am trying to move up to 1440p.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Aiming for now to January sometime if it's a good idea to wait for the rumored supers.
BUDGET RANGE: USD $300-600
Before Rebates

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming at 1440p. I don't do any AI work.

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB and EVGA gold 750W PSU

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: Ryzen 5600X3D CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Newegg or Amazon
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: USA

PARTS PREFERENCES:
none

OVERCLOCKING: Not planning on it,I'm only air cooling.

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 2560 X1440p

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Ideally I'd like to make full use of my monitor resolution and play darktide and metro Exodus at something better than potato quality now that I have a CPU that isn't half a decade old.

Looking around I'm thinking the RTX 4070 is my Nvidia option or 7800/7900 XT if I go with AMD

Thank you in advance everyone!

It all depends on how long you can wait. You can get a general idea if these new cards are even a option by looking at the leaked data. It should get officially announced the first week of January. If nvidia does what it has before we will start to see the actual cards for sale about a month or so after that. They will likely stage the 3 "super" cards out a week or two apart so the 4070 super might not be available until say march.

The rumor is that the 4070 super will sell for right around $600 which is the current price for the 4070. Problem is these are the reference cards which tend to be hard to get and we also have to deal with the scalpers.

I am going to bet you will have to wait until summer to be able to buy a 4070 super for list price.

The leaked data though seem to suggest that the 4070 super is finally faster than the 7800xt, maybe justifying the extra $50.

Keep an eye out for the 6800xt also. But a pc similar to yours but I went for an i5 12600kf that I got for 140 and a z690 open box board from microcenter.

A couple of weeks later Newegg had an asrock phantom gaming 6800xt oc marked down for $439. Which is pretty close to the 7800xt. In fact Newegg right now has a refurbished msi 6800xt foot $429. Compared to the 7800xt the benchmarks are pretty close with the 6800xt actually beating the newer card many times due to having more processing units.

I also am at 1440p. For the budget I’d look for a sale on the 6800xt, look for the 7800xt. Nvidia side the 4070.

Those would be the options I think unless you really catch a deal on a 7900xt or 4070ti.

Edit looks like prices are up.

The cheapest 4070 I see on Newegg now is 549. The cheapest 7800xt is 539.

Honestly I think I’d take a hard look at the 6800xt. That way you’ve got a little extra budget left for any contingencies. Plus the cards have been out 2-3 years so the drivers on those should be pretty stable. My card has been great and it was one of the cheaper ones on Newegg.

Here’s the card I got.

As I said they do have a refurbished msi model for $429 if you want to save some money. But my 6800xt so far is good, but it’s a decent size card and mine requires 3 8 pin plugs. It does look like they recommend an 800 watt psu though, so that may be the consideration as the 4070 will probably be a bit more power efficient.

I see, thank you. It sounds like if there is going to be any price drop on existing 4070s when super releases it won't be for some time either.
Lots of speculation on this topic. The ones I suspect might be true is nvidia will drastically cut the number of normal 4070 GPU chips they produce which means there will not be a oversupply to drive the price a lot lower. Since almost everything is the same the will just test the chips and anything that is not good enough to be a 4070 super will be left for production of normal 4070. It all depends on their yield which actually increases the longer the produce the chip.

Okay that does seem to narrow down my options. I think my 750W will force me to look at the 7800 or 4070 despite the 6800 being nearly as good and a better price.
Ray tracing doesn't seem to make a big difference to me personally so I'm not wedded to Nvidia.
Does the amount of vram matter a lot at 1440?

I would say that depends how long you are keeping the card. If this is say a 2 year card then probably no need to worry. A 3-5 year card, perhaps but much of the tech today seems to be trending towards dlss and fsr, so maybe vram won’t be as important later?
I plan on this being 3-5 years, that's about how often I like to upgrade.

I appreciate all the advice. Anything else I should be on the lookout for?

At 3-5 years I’d want something with the extra vram myself. So if you are set on keeping the 750 watt psu I think I’d be looking at the 7800xt. AMD claims you need 700. That and a 6800xt are neck and neck except the 6800xt has more processing units etc but is a little over design now. They are pretty close performance wise. So if I’m concerned about vram then I like 7800xt with the idea I may want to upgrade the power supply down the road as the pc ages.

I second the 6800 XT or 7800 XT, I used a power supply calculator and honestly you should be able to run even a 5800X3D and 6900 XT with your 750w. I would go with whichever is the better deal.

Wow thanks for running that. I think I'll go for a 7800 XT. Specifically I'm looking at the two models below. Reading around it seems like sapphire is the better brand? Are there any brands to avoid?

Both are good brands. Whichever you prefer is up to you.

Here’s another option if you want to save $$

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/GY...deon-rx-7800-xt-16-gb-video-card-rx-78tqickf9

As I said I’ve got a 6800xt, but I’ve got the AsRock phantom gaming. Here’s the 7800xt version of that.

Personally I typically go for the cheaper cards if everything looks in order. So I’d consider the xfx card for 509 unless there’s something you like better about one of the other cards.

There are not really any particular brands to avoid, but some models can be worse than others. That said, that's what reviews are for, and that is not the case here, they're both pretty equivalent. I would go with whichever is cheaper or you like more honestly.
