ok i'm upgrading my system, and atm i can't afford a new mobo, my one is an old shuttle via something with no pci-e and stuff so i'm looking for an AGP VGA. and i intend to keep this VGA even when i switch my mobo to a AMD 64 supporting one.

anyway, i have about 250$ and i can't get to a decision on wich one should i choose, i've read some reviews on the diffs between the 6800 and the 6600 and i'm really leaning to the 6800. But i can't find anywhere an AGP 6800, does it exists? if it doesn't i would love some inputs on what AGP VGA i should buy for gamming purposes.

plus i would love too some recommendations of websites that can ship worldwide.

Well, there are several 6800 AGP versions you could opt for. You mentioned a shuttle system, a big issue will be how much space you have. Most of the AGP 6800 boards are pretty long, even by standard ATX desktop standards so I'd check on that first.
I bought a 6800GS AGP (BFG 6800GS OC) and I do like the performance but I am hesitant to recommend as I don't feel as though Nvidia gives that product line too much worth (two months after release there is still no WHQL certified driver for this card). I'd say that if you have the money a 6800 card will be far better than any 6600 option - especially if you like recent games like COD2 and FEAR. If you can accept some driver hastles then go with the 6800GS, otherwise, see if you can find a 6800 vanilla with some good OCing potential. Alternatively, if you do have $250 that is a big portion of the cost of a PCI-E upgrade (a PCI-E 6800GS can be had for as little as $155 at NewEgg right now).

well i can't afford a pci-e system since i would have to switch my mobo and my amd 1400 and prolly my mems too, i got 2x 256mb DDR something. (i will check that later when i get home i'm working atm)

anyway my current choice of upgrade was VGA, since i can buy later a not so top mobo with agp and 939 socket, cuz i don't intend to sli and oc anyway (only ocing video maybe).

dekkard i've read that diff between 6800GS and the GT is nule, like 2 fps, i can live with that since GT is like 20~50$ less.

and prozac comment, is there any review that i can read saying that?

so anyway i need some recommendation on a 6800GT AGP, which one should i get?

Good luck finding an AGP flavor GT. The GS is available now and there is the possibility the pipes and shader units can be unlocked to make it a GT. I have one, and mine unlocked and is running fine, but your mileage may vary.

There is also the 7800gs that is out now.

It really depends on the budget, and also the amount of room in the case. It also depends on the specs of the rest of the box, because there is little use to put a top end card in a 2G box. A 6600gt would probably be fine for a box like that.

if you got an AMD 1400 and only 512 megs of ram.. i would just go with a 6600gt or gs.. your system is a hugh bottleneck for those cards... save the dough.. get a 6600 and upgrade later..

yo should really save your cash for a SLI mobo later on. agp is on its way out unfortuinetly.. so your upgrade plaths that way are going to be limited..

6800GT is better at stock speeds but apart from one model, there aren't many GTs floating around and they are typically a bit more pricey. The GS is advantageous if you can find them nearer to $200 than $230....the benefit being the price advantage as well as overclocking potential. With aftermarket aircooling (rev 5) a number of ppl have OCed these to past Ultra speeds. The true potential depends of course on the success of unlocking - on mine, vertex worked ok but additional pipes resulted in artifacts in HL2:LC (although I'm now reading that others observe artifacts in only isolated games - particularly HL2:LC so who knows).
Personally, I got my GS for $190 and I wouldn't have paid over $200. Now, I doubt I'd pay over $170 for it....the PCI-E to AGP price differential is too great now and I'd just push towards PCI-E sooner than later.

so, what would be a budget VGA for my amd 1400? 6600GT? guess i'll get one so i can replace this annoying geforce2 mx400, then later on i get a full system.

i would have to say the 6800 GS. My friend has it and he loves it. He plays battlefield 2 with this card, no chunks at all. pretty good card.

Hi everybody,

Well, I have similar case, but with other configuration that is old too.

My system is:

AMD Atlhon XP 2200+
1Gb Ram pc2100
AGP 8x
Monitor Viewsonic VA1912w (19 " widescreen)

And I don't know what video card to buy. I like a XFX 6600GT or a PNY 6800GS.

Can I buy the PNY 6800GS and watch better result that the 6600GT???

Or is better that I buy the xfx 6600GT AGP for my system.

My monitor is wide, and the games that I like to play, in resolution of 1280x800 1440x900 that are resolutions of the monitor.

Many thanks

I have the same issue - Stuck with AGP but don't want to upgrade the mobo just yet. I did have a Radeon 9800 pro which served me very well right up until I got Call of Duty 2 and the training level tried to display some snow. So I got the BFG 6800 GS OC and I have to say I'm very pleased with it. I've run COD2 and Far Cry on highest settings with no problems, and so I'm going to stick with it until my next system is ready (I'm slowing buying parts for a second homebuild).

I managed to get my card cheap on offer at overclockers.co.uk. Otherwise it would have been a tough choice as it's only going to see a year's use at most.

Ok.

Somebody please can post the minimun requeriments to see diference in performance between a 6600GT and 6800GS AGP.

In the page of the manufactures say PIII and AMD but I really don't think that with that processors can play very good.

What system we need to don't have bottleneck with the processor.

Many thanks

in response to first guys post

check out eVGA's 6800gs CO has the copper core and higher clock speeds 75mhz higher on the core and 100mhz higher on memory in the agp version

12 pixel pipelines that easily open up and out perform 6800ultra without any overclocking

and with a price tag of 200 on the dot how can u really argue
