Looking for a cpu/motherboard upgrade

Hello all, so i've been looking for a replacement for my CPU for a while now.. Perhaps a motherboard upgrade aswell, if that's needed at all. Since I haven't been keeping track of the whole "hardware scene" for years, and there have been so many releases, I honestly have no clue about what to get... I upgraded my graphics card a few years ago, but I'm sure that's not the main problem here. The PC is used strictly for gaming (any type) Just ask for more information if it's required! CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 @2.50GHz
RAM: 8,00GB DDR2 @334MHz
Motherboard: Micro-Star international co.,LTD MS-7514
GPU: 2048MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 6900 series (sapphire)
(Storage: 698GB WDC)

Budget? Intel has gone through a few generations since Q9300, DDR3 came and is now DDR4 is coming on strong

Thanks for answering I'll look for some DDR3 cards, won't be hard to find. Then i will have to upgrade the q9300 i guess? budget would be around 200-300 max

Might look at an AMD 6300, AM3+ mobo and 8GB of DRAM, can fit that in under $300 and have a base to do other upgrades down the road
