Looking for a gaming headset that allows sound in - ie. Logitech Digital Precision headset

Greetings - got a gaming headset question here. I currently use a Razer Kraken headset for gaming, but previously had a Logitech Digital Precision PC Gaming Headset (http://support.logitech.com/en_za/product/digital-precision-pc-gaming-headset) which served me well for many years, besides it having a very flaky volume slider and wacky driver support early on. What I loved about the Logitech is that the speaker is actually suspended a short distance from the ear, and the earpiece, which surrounds the ear, is open, which allows outside noise in. When I played, I would have game sound on using speakers, and then pipe my Ventrillo through the headset. This way, if I wanted to have a conversation with someone in the room, it was easy.

Now, when I have the Razer Kraken on I can't hear a thing but what's in the headset. This is nice when that's all I want to hear, but most of the time when the kids come in or my wife comes in I get surprised or they have to tap me on the shoulder. I'm looking for something like the Digital Precision headset that allows the sound to be heard (maybe not the BEST fidelity, but it is fine for me) and also outside noise (like talking, doorbell, etc.) to be heard as well. Is there anything out there like this?

I did some searching and couldn't really find a solution. I did see a lot of "open back" headsets which seem to be more premium and I'm not sure if the "open back" is a design feature for a better sound stage or if it is actually like my old Logitech headset that has an open design and can hear outside noise easily. Most of the photos/descriptions of open back headsets appear to have a closed ear surround which leads me to believe they don't let in much outside noise. Anyone with any good info out there? TIA!

Ahhh, this is great! Thank you for cluing me in on this. I had seen these listed, but I wasn't sure of the concept. I see there are varying degrees of "openness" in these headsets and also purpose; some more geared toward music listening, studio, gaming, etc. I'll have to keep poking around. I see right off the bat some low-cost Sennheiser units that might work for the times when I need to have the awareness and I can use my Razer Kraken when I am able to. Thanks!
