Just looking to finally get away from amd, though seemingly cheaper and simpler I just think its high time I went intel (first computer I built was amd FX 8350 + RX 480 gpu, which i do not recommend!). I've been browsing on amazon and newegg and cant seem to find a good intel mobo that supports ddr3 ram, looking for good recommendations (with links pls). Gonna just buy a new mobo, gpu and processor and slap it in my old case with everything else. Figured I could save money just sticking to ddr3 since I already have 4 8gb ddr3 sticks.

sidenote does anyone have recommendations for which gtx 1080 to get? I see one on amazon a lot cheaper than the others

I don't really know the difference between any of the cards tbh, so many models. Might have to wait until cyber monday or something to actually grab one though.

May I suggest moving on to the latest Intel 8th Gen DDR4 system?

i3 option

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i3-8100 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor ($118.90 @ B&H)
Motherboard: MSI - H370M BAZOOKA Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($78.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $262.88

i5 option:

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor ($199.89 @ B&H)
Motherboard: MSI - H370M BAZOOKA Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($78.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $343.87

Otherwise you're only options are looking @ eBay for used components that hopefully will not suddenly die after a couple times of usage.

If you actually have a budget for GTX 1080 then I'd suggest holding that off and getting upgraded to a newer DDR4 platform. Differences are just aftermarket coolers and higher or lower base and OC speeds.

If you really insist on getting a DDR3 system then at least get 4th gen with i5-4670k/4690k or i7-4770/4790k with a Z97 Motherboard.

Alright well thanks for your help, guess im gonna sell my 32gb's of ddr3 and make the leap to ddr4. Really I probably wouldn't be spending much more because the i7 4790k is priced at 380 right now and good luck finding a LGA 1150 motherboard that isn't for mining cheap. Its ridiculous! The i7 8700 is 309.99 ( I don't even know how to overclock anyway) so thats 70 bucks saved. Im looking at this motherboard now which is only 63.98! Please lemme know your thoughts on it because it might be too good to be true

Assuming that motherboard is good then that plus the CPU would probably pay for the ddr4 ram upgrade itself

Thoughts though, is 16gb ram "good enough" for gaming and multitasking?

That motherboard is not compatible with Coffee Lake 8th gen CPUs
