Shaun, you don't need an i7. The only difference is Hyperthreading, which makes no performance difference in games.

If you want to run an i5, you need a new board (LGA1150, preferably Z97 chipset) and the processor. If you get the 4690K like I suggested previously, you'll want a cooler as well. Considering your previous $400 top budget, I recommend this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($219.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC12DX_RD 68.5 CFM CPU Cooler ($47.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($103.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $371.97

I5 and I7 are very similar. The biggest difference between the two as far as us humans are concerned is that the I7 has hyperthreading, and the I5 does not. The good new is that almost no games use Hyperthreading, so we can order the I5-4790K and save about $100.

The 1155 socket has been gone for awhile now. Even the last CPU's for the current 1150 socket will be out starting to hit the market next month. Late this year, or very early next year, the Skylake desktop CPU's will be using a new 1151 socket, which will slowly bring about the end of the 1150 socket boards.

If you want the cpu only for gaming, the i5-4690K overclocked will be faster than the non-K i7-4790 and also cheaper.

Anything below i5-4690K will not be worth the upgrade from your 1155 system. My advice is to hold on a bit more and see what new CPUs will come out from both AMD (Zen) and Intel (Skylake).

The i5-4690K is the top-end i5. The i5 is clocked 100MHz slower than the i7, which is likely not noticeable. The main differences between the i5's and i7's are HyperThreading and more cache (from memory, most games aren't sufficiently multi-threaded for the HyperThreading to be of much benefit).

Remember, you can pick up the i5 at MicroCentre for only $200.
