So basically i have been looking through a bunch of i5 2400, computers on ebay hoping to get 1 for Christmas and pop my brothers old R7 260x into it, and so id be able to play LoL, overwatch,
CS:GO and skyrim but im not to sure if any of the old computers motherboards are compatible with the graphics card. Most of the computers are old Dell Optiplex's and im unsure if they are like the HP Compaq 8000 that im using right now . The motherboard doesnt support a graphics card that requires more than 35watts and the GPU didnt even fit into my motherboard.
I guess what im asking is if a dell optiplex is compatible with a R7 260x, im sure id have to put a new PSU into it aswell and thats fine since i already have a 430w psu. There isnt really any way me as far as i know to be able to tell what optiplex is compatible with this card.

I will find your solution, but I will need to know what price range you are looking for. If you were to find a optiplex that is compatible, it wont work well because the cpu in the PC will obviously bottleneck with your card.(unless you are lucky)

Price has nothing to do with performence, a $300 GTX 780 will perform on par with a $500 R9 290X. CPUs are the slowest progressing component, only like 5% of actual performence gain, making that i5 comparable to a current i3, which would make a fine pair.

Lol, even a 5 year old pentium is impossible to find for $10, an i5 2400 is worth around $80 used, about $130 new i'd say.
Still a very potent CPU, and will easily outperform an i3 6100 with 0 bottleneck.
You don't rate performance based on cost, it'll handle an R9 260X no problem.
There is no 'luck' factor as you put it, there is statistical fact as to whether it will bottleneck or not, and it will most definitely be fine.

Not sure how picky you are, but this is something you might be interested in:
Dell Precision T7500 with 24gb RAM, 2 500gb HDD's and a slow-clocked E5606, which I would change for a X5687 which you can overclock.

EDIT: I just saw your budget. This won't fit, as the Precision itself goes a bit above the $150, but either way you get more performance per dollar even without the processor upgrade. You can still overclock the CPU though.
Has a 1100W PSU. And server-grade cooling (no aftermarket case will ever match up to the cooling capacity that these towers have).
