Question Looking for a motherboard for 13700k.....a have a few questions

It's time to upgrade. Still running my overclocked 8700k system (see specs in my signature) but decided to move on and start upgrading to 13700k. It seems that the hardest part to pick is the motherboard this time around. In my old system I am using a MSI Z370 Gaming Carbon Pro. This board, even so a lot of people told me that it only has moderate quality issues for overclocking, has served me well the last 5 years and I never had issues with my overclocked, delidded 8700k. Most of the time I ran an all core 4.9 or recently 5.0 overclock and never ran into any issues.

I would like to get MSI again (since I am used to their BIOS), but it doesn't have to. I could see myself also going the ASUS route on the Motherboard. Maybe even with another manufacturer if there is a real good value.

I would like to get a Z790 board. I think I will switch to DDR5. Even so I hate to buy new RAM even so it hurts to spend the money on the 32GB kit. I planning moderate overclocking. Don't need to go to the limit, since I don't feel like spending days in find the highest possible epitomized overclocking settings. I am passed those days. I like to get faster ram and overclock with XMP.

I don't need WiFi.

I noticed the Carbon series MSI boards are like $350 more than they used to be. Are they now high end boards? They used to be entry level overclocking boards.....

I don't really want to spend more than around $200 to $300 for the motherboard. Anything in that price range that can be recommended?

Thanks!

The carbon series are/were certainly mid-range. Everything nowadays is HORRIBLY expensive.

WiFi is pretty much a standard feature nowadays. Especially on the higher end chipsets (Z-series)

Check out the MSI Z790 Tomahawk WiFi for $320.

Yeah, I was looking at that one. But I couldn't find a review. At least not for the DDR5 version. Also, its not anywhere available. You can still moderately overclock with that one, right?

The MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi comes in two variants, one DDR5 and the other DDR4. The motherboard is this review is the latter. Don't be fooled into thinking the DDR4 version is inferior. Rather, besides the support memory type, everything is the same between both versions.

Generally the MSI Tomahawk boards have been solid performers.

The Z690 has a BIOS flash button to update the BIOS and will run that processor. DDR5
With the speed of the newer processors pretty much pushing to limits already, overclocking is about a thing of the past.

I would argue in favor of underclocking these things. Set a realistic power limit and avoid needing huge coolers and putting all that strain on the motherboard.

A little undervolt and you can get most of the performance without the high temperatures.

To save a few degrees you could also look at a contact frame from thermaltake or the thermal grizzly one (That comes with a lapping kit). Not sure delidding is worth it this time around.
