Greetings.
I'm looking to buy a new laptop to replace my dad's aging office-issued laptop. The laptop in question is a 14-inch HP, i5-3230M, 4GB of RAM. That thing is literally falling apart piece-by-piece, and many of its features aren't working anymore (webcam, microphone), and it's extremely slow and laggy too. Trust me when I say it's slow, that thing is possessed.
He's not really someone who cares about tech, so even though that laptop is unfit for use anymore, he's still happy using it. That is, until the laptop suddenly shuts down few days ago in the middle of a very important meeting with some cross-country offshore higher-ups. That's when he decided he needs a new one.
Budget is around 700 AUD (we're currently moving to a new house, so yea, a bit strapped here). We're not asking much of the new laptop, it just has to be 'better' in every respect to this HP. I don't follow advancements in laptop tech much, but I guess a laptop better than a 7 year one under 700 is possible, or am I asking too much?
Features we need :
Fast and responsive day-to-day operation (so, an SSD, right?)
Full HD display
long battery life (at least 3 hours, is it unrealistic?)
500GB storage
functional webcam and microphones
NEW.
Features we want :
IPS display.
decent-looking build,
thin and light,
8GB of RAM
Anyway, I filled that form I found at that stickied thread, maybe it can clear things up :
1. What is your budget?
$600-700, can go slightly higher if it's worth it, absolutely no more than 750. (AUD)
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
14 or 15, any size really
3. What screen resolution do you want?
Full HD 1080p is a must
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
A bit of both I guess? I mean, it's going to be used as a main machine, but it won't be used to do heavy works per se. Office, zoom / MS Team, browsing and the likes
Besides, we already have a Ryzen 5 2600 / Vega 56 PC for our heavy computing needs here
5. How much battery life do you need?
I wonder if it's possible to get more than 3 hours in this budget
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
No gaming at all, foregoing the dedicated GPU is fine
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
Office, MS Team, light photo editing, browsing, email, screen recording
Honestly, the usual 'work PC' jobs
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
500 GB minimum. More is always welcome
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
I'm buying offline, but if there's a deal to be had in Amazon or the likes I'm good
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
Until the eventual heat-death of the universe
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
Uhh.. what's an optical drive? Is that, is that the plate thing you can find inside the microwave?
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons
Alright, I prefer Lenovo if it can be helped. I've been using Lenovo for as long as I can remember and it never fails me (except their touchpad). So, I'm kind of a Lenovo 'fanboy'.
If there's a good reason to jump ship, I'm all in
I've been looking around and saw some good things on Ryzen laptops, but as I said I don't know much about laptop tech. I really don't have a preferred CPU in mind, pretty much anything goes.
EDIT :
We also need an ethernet port. Again, webcam and microphone should be a decent one.
Well, if you need more info, just ask away. Thanks for the input...
