A few years ago i bought a Intel Core i7-980X 6 Core (12 with HT) CPU, it was very expensive back then. I am planing to build another PC now and i want a CPU that is at least as good as the 980X, but i do not want to pay as much money as i did back then.
So, iam looking for a CPU that has at least 6 real cores and with HT 12 virtual cores, it should not be slower, should have at least the same cache sizes!! and should be a good quality CPU.

Is there someone who can realy compare the 980X to modern CPUs and can name a worthy replacement (sockets does not matter but i would prefer Intel CPUs)?

Thanks for your help

I paid about 1000 euro for the 980X i bought it as it was just released. I do not want to pay as much again, at max 400 euro. But if i do i want to get i cpu with at least the same properties in every! aspect. My problem is that i cannot judge the "at least the same" part and neither the "every aspect" part.
So the 5820k is right in the price range, what would be the next model in the up to 500$ range?

your next option would be the 5930k 6c/12t @3.5 ghz. It runs the same 15 MB cache as the 5820k nut gives you 40 pci express 3.0 lanes instead of 28
