Looking for a super fast SQM or QoS capable router

Basically I'm looking for a new router. I have a fiber connection with 300mbps both up and down, but since we are a big familiy and have lots of traffic (torrents, game updates, 4k streaming etc...) we occasionally max it. One user may end up stealing everything leaving the others without any connection at all.

As far as i'm aware the only thing you can do (except setting a download limit in every application) is to set up QoS in the router, but this really throttles my connection to like 50/50 which is not acceptable. In other words, my asus ac66u is really struggling.. I know ubiquiti's offers like the edgerouter x has a feature called SQM (smart queue management) which is supposed to very good, but it's limited to like 100mpbs. Furthermore, I haven't been able to find any device at any price that can handle SQM or regular QoS at 300mpbs.

So to the question: Does such a router even exist?

Thanks in advance :)

Asus's GUI is based off the DD-WRT platform, and it offers QoS management and even fine grain manipulation of your bandwidth per device or assigned IP address in your network. You will need to key in the bandwidth of your network into the box under the QoS enabled button.

This may also come of use to you:

Thanks for the reply! However, it doesn't really solve my issue. You see, I need to make sure the router I buy is strong enough to handle my speed of 300mbps with SQM/QoS enabled.

You likely are going to have to use a actual pc to do this...or buy a appliance/firewall that is basically a pc.

Pretty much the only reason routers can even run things like 300mbps internet connections is because they figured out how to offload the NAT function to asic chips. As soon as you enable the QoS even without any rules you get a massive drop in speed because all the traffic must now pass the CPU.

In addition what you are asking for is called traffic shaping. It takes a lot more cpu effort than say a simple firewall filter that blocks ip addresses.

Pretty much a dual nic pc running one of the many free firewall firmware will do what you need.

In general most things that cause issue on these very large connections are file downloads. Almost all download software has abilities to limit the rates. If you were to set those options in that software to a value say 75% of the link speed it might reduce problem enough to live with. Things like netflix 4k stream are not even 10% of your bandwidth so they likely do not cause much issues even with multiple people watching different movies. It would be somewhat simpler to get people your house to police themselves than try to implement some fancy rules. Bit torrent in particular is very hard to limit, unlike most other applications when it detect packet loss it actually opens more sessions trying to find a better source.

Hi!

I really appreaciate you taking the time to write such an informative reply. However, if you don't mind be picking your brain again, are there any specific setups you would recommend to achieve this? Also, I have heard about ClearOS, but there's probably better options?

Thanks again! :)

One of the most popular ones is called pfsense but there are many and most it is a personal preference. The fundamental functions are actually part of the linux OS itself. The fronts ends though make it much much easier to configure than editing nasty iptables files.

Depending on your budget and how ridiculous you want to get maybe a business router might be a better fit for your needs.

A Cisco ISR 4331 can reach up to 300 mbps with a performance license and does QoS and Traffic Shapping.

I can put together a estimate if your interested.

I would greatly appreciate if you could give me an estimate, yes! :)
