Looking for a way to use a single-line headset/earbuds on PC

I'm trying to use either my headset or Apple earbuds as a mic/headphone combo, but when I plug in this adapter (linked below) and plug in my earbuds, it doesn't seem to work, however the mic portion pops up. Perhaps it could just be a bad jack on the front panel of my PC case though. So I'm looking for at least some kind of USB-to-headset adapter that will work with it. All I've seen is the USB adapters with two jacks (separating mic and audio). Can anyone help me out? I'm trying to stay a bit on the budget side of things.

Solution
Okay. That means that there's either an issue with the port (less likely), or there's an issue with the front panel audio cable. That's pretty easy to knock a bit loose. Make sure it's seated properly.

I tried the regular headset, but it doesn't pop up as a choice for audio playback. Only as a mic.

I meant to ask:
When you connect the Apple earbuds into the adapter, the mic plug into the front panel mic jack, and the headphone plug into the front panel headphone jack. In this configuration, do the headphones (the ones in the earbuds) play sound?

Also, you say that a conventional headset with two plugs does not get detected when you connect the headphone plug into the front headphone jack?

If that's the case, try the rear jacks and let us know if that works.

Also, are you asking for a recommendation for a USB sound card that has a mic/headphone combo jack?

well, my PC is in my desk so plugging into the back of the PC wouldn't be a real option. It is plugged in correctly in the front, but only the mic works. Audio continues to go out my speakers, and the heaphones don't appear as a listed playback device in the Sound Manager
