Hello, About a month ago I picked out a load of parts and ordered them all, A month down the line and I have every single one, except for the CPU. I have looked literally everywhere trying to find an i5 8400 but I cant find one, I do have one on order but it is easily cancelled and keeps getting delayed (Was expected today, now expected the 10th, this has happened since mid December) so my question is:

Would it be worth it to wait for the the processor to come back in stock (however long that would be) or just either get an OEM version and another cooler, or go for an i5 8600K instead?

My PC so far: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/JvDRf8

What I will use the PC for: I'll mostly be using the computer for gaming / light college work, games include, PUBG, Fortnite, League, Rainbow Six Siege, Witcher 3 and other newer releases.

I would also consider going to Ryzen if I didn't already have the motherboard

i7-8700 would be the best choice, especially paired with that 1080.

but that aside, it would depend on you and how long you want to wait, the 8600k is a great CPU non the less, the difference is that the 8400 offers great "bang for the buck" while the 8600 steps it up, but difference between them is not MAJOR- YET. On the other hand you have the 8700 (which is extremely expensive in your country it would seem....), which can perform very well even compared to an overclocked 8600k without OC capability, comes with a cooler (not the best, but hey...), and it offers great turbo speed+6 extra threads.

or maybe it's a sign 😉 you should go for a stronger CPU hahahaha......

Yeah it is quite a bit more expensive in my country which kinda sucks, you mentioning "waiting" is kind of a coincidence as I ordered the i5 8400 for £170 and now im waiting for it to come into stock and since then the price has risen to 200+ which isnt much, but ya know 😛

Another thing is that I dont really feel like an i7 is needed for what I intend to use my PC for (I'm only on a 1080p 144hz Monitor) so the parts I already have are already overkill I think, I'm just kinda stuck in a dead end with the i5 8400 being out of stock everywhere 🙁

I thought an i7 was overkill too... and here I am.. sitting on a 3rd gen i5... feeling like "WTF did I buy this piece of shit for. You have to remember, that your system will only get older. best way to keep up with new stuff, is to buy (resonably) best parts available, that touches on CPUs quite strongly, because they tie in your MOTHERBOARD+ RAM - almost everytime, which is a huge expense if you wish to upgrade that part of your system in the future.

But overall, yeah.. it's only 1080p, it's still quite a mark to hit. 60hz is easy to do for most systems, but the 144hz is not so much. I think you don't have to worry about it being overkill, but that would be a heavier load on your GPU. Point would be that everyone changes their GPU at least once per system that they own, some twice or three times. If you think about this, then you will understand why investing in a CPU is probably the most important part about building a system that lasts you a very long time. Although I don't want to take away the spotlight from GPUs, I'm just trying to share my point.
