Looking for advice on wether to upgrade PC or go brand new.

Hey

Sorry if this a commonly asked question and I've just missed a thread somewhere that could of helped. I'm looking for advice on wether to upgrade my PC or just basically go all new parts.

Intel i5-4590 3.30ghz
Gigabyte Z97X motherboard
8 gb DDR3 ram
Msi Geforce gtx 960 2gb
Corsair 600w

That's my current machine, it's done ok for me for the past 3 years or so but, it is starting to show its age. Even in some older games that are demanding like the newer total war series, I can't get a full 60 fps on higher settings.

My question is basically, can I upgrade this current pc to match the standards of games now or, do I need to completely start again? I'm not up to date on the latest stuff but, I see the new intel cpus need DDR4 ram which would require a new motherboard.

Anyway sorry for waffling on, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

CPU meaningful upgrade is i7-4790k, ~$350, but if you can find some good used one, go for it. You need to upgrade your GPU anyway, only price diff will be caused by ddr4 ram. My recommendation is with similar spending, get new technology. Both choices are good

Thanks man, do you recommend the Ryzen over an Intel CPU? Is it purely a cost thing? Everyone is going mad for them on Facebook at the moment but I haven't really looked into them.

This was the answer I was looking for anyway. Looks like I'm gonna have to get a whole new system practically. I'm looking at getting a 1070 for my GPU upgrade. Will the CPU mentioned be a good match for this card?

Ryzen series is occupying market due to their cost-effectiveness and running cooler than Intel, not to mention Ryzen 1600 has 6 cores and 1700 has 8 cores. Extra cores are very helpful with streaming, video editing and well-optimized AAA games. Ryzen 1600 is good enough for 1070

Thanks again buddy. I think thats what I'll go for then. If it's cheaper and runs better then I don't see why I shouldn't make the change to AMD.
