Hey, I have an old desktop (Dell Tower 2300) and I'm looking to fix it up. I have the Windows XP restore disc, but I need a new processor (this ones missing a connector) and I was wondering what RAM I need to buy, what processors are compatible, what hard drives I can use (this one holds only 30GBs), video cards and other things that might make it a working desktop again.

The motherboard is a Bluford E139765 and the socket where the processors goes say mPGA478B

Any help is appreciated

There are many limitations/problems when working with prebuilt towers, and the most common thing you tend to want to change first is the motherboard and power supply. I suggest these two components as -

1) The motherboard tends to be modified and BIOS locked for original dell specs, preventing many upgrades. (This is not the case for all prebuilts but many are)

2) The power supplies tend to be cheap and very low amperage, which can be a problem.

What would be your budget?

There's not a lot I can tell you about it other than it had an Intel Pentium 4 with some numbers that read 1.8GHz/512/400/1.525v/SL6LA and 512 MBs of ram

I don't really understand a lot of this computer stuff

Budget would probably be no more that $200 at a time. I was thinking about buy the less expensive parts first and saving up along and along to get the more expensive ones

What would be the price of getting this one to an expectable condition (able to do simple things like watch videos) vs getting it to a condition able to play games possibly? Also the cost of either just buying/building a new?
