Looking for CPU Upgrade configuration answers..

Hello everyone. I currently have the following setup:

Thermaltake Swing VB6000BWS Case
ASUS M4N72-E Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ @ 2.6ghz
3GB RAM
3 Hard Drives, 1 IDE, 1 SATA, 1 external
Nvidia 9600GT OC2
Coolmax 475W PSU

I want to upgrade my processor to best thing I can get for less than $100, using NewEgg prices if possible. I have been looking at the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz Socket AM2 89W but am not sure because I have been having issues while gaming lately.

My games keep crashing to the desktop. I spoke to BFG, who said it sounded like my PSU was failing. I discovered in the device manager that my coprocessor was not functioning. I installed the chipset for my motherboard and it went away, but I'm still crashing to the desktop while gaming.

Should I even bother with getting a new CPU yet, get a new PSU first, or replace the video card? The last video card in this system was a Nvidia 7600GS and I *NEVER* crashed to the desktop in games.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

if its a CTD, i HIGHLY doubt its a PSU failure. a PSU failure would generally shut off the whole system. a CTD usually implies bad code being executed, so i would put my money on the GPU. first, update your video card drivers (or rollback, if you are ony the latest) if that doesnt fix the problem, i would imagine youll need to replace it.

I pretty much thought that it wasn't the PSU either, because that only happens when I am gaming. Logically, like you said, if it was PSU it would shut the whole system down.

I have updated the drivers, I can't remember if I had this problem before I got the updated version from the internet. Before that, I just had what was on the CD it came with.

I've only had this GPU for a few months, bought it still in the box from a guy on Craigslist. Bad idea, I suppose.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent CPU upgrade for my setup? I want the best I can get without having to flash any BIOS (which IS needed if you use 1066mhz RAM), or anything else really. I just want to pop it in and go. I'm just now sure if there is a big enough difference between a 65w and 89w power supply that should concern me with heat or power usage.

I just called BFG again. I'm sure they were thrilled getting my call on New Years Day. LOL

The guy recommended that I use HWMonitor to check my voltages. This is what I'm getting:

+3.3V Value= 1.12V
+5V Value = 5.08V
-12V Value= -12.10V
-5V Value= -13.44V

He said that my PSU is undervolting and that it needs to be replaced before it damages my motherboard and other components. Can anyone verify this, and let me know that he's just not trying to get out of sending me a new GPU? Thanks

I have since upgraded to a Corsair TX650 PSU, and I am still occasionally crashing to desktop from a game. BFG also sent a replacement card, and that didn't help either.
I'm starting to think the problem is heat?

I think you jumped the gun there a bit. I would have checked to see what your temps were first. The last time I had a game kick me to the desk top it was actually a bad memory stick that did it.

Check your temps. Then run memtest on your memory. Run one stick at a time to determine if it is one of them. In regards to a cpu upgrade you MB will take the new phenoms or athlon processors. You will get a modest boost from a X3 or X4 athlon and they are cheap 100 bucks and less.

I upgraded my wife's system to an X4 620 from a 5600+ Windsor and it gave her system a modest boost. She also runs a 9600GT.

I am not getting any clear picture of what your problem could. And you replaced psu and vid.

The suggestion to memtest is reasonable.

Beyond that I keep thinking you have a software mess. And I tend to think reinstall operating system and start over with that.

Unfortunately, that means wipe out everything probably; which means you have to back up any valued files b4 you reinstall.

I just can't see any clear solution other than that - you are describing all kinds of changes and stuff - there is no clear picture that overall the system is ok.

If you reinstall the o/s, and problems persist; then it's a hardware device or the hardware configuration - a config problem, at that point, would perhaps point to some other card you installed. And again, there's the idea of memtest still unresolved.

You can't fix many things at once. You can fix or test one thing at a time, and thereby narrow the many possibilities.

One approach would be to go back to basic hardware - remove all extra hardware and run a simple minimal hardware config; and see if that is stable.

There are many details we don't know about your system - it's not like we can sit down and inspect various parts or software areas.

There are many maybes and we are guessing as best we can. Adding new cpu or other hardware is simply another soup bone into the stew. A reinstall and backup of all files would tend to eliminate a lot of questions about the software environment - and if still problematic, we could then track hardware issues.

I really don't know what would solve your problems - I am simply trying to level the possibilities a bit. If you can't get stable; then it's just more changes and more changes - did anything get fixed or it just different. You need some point of stability as a reference - such as reinstall o/s or stripped down to basic hardware. Or what?

You can't deal the cards and shuffle at the same time.

I'm considering this exact set up for a small homebuild i have that's aging a bit
Not looking for a "gaming" rig per se, but I do play Everquest and occasionally like to check out FPS games. I have a 9800GT 512 that's doing a bang-up job in Everquest, however this rig lacks a dual-core.

So... have you fixed your problem?
Will this CPU run on this MB?

Nothing posted on Asus site for this MB concerning the 6000+

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Anyone else running this set up with NO problems???
