I need a configuration for very memory intensive physics simulations. I have i7 4930k, so I'd prefer a compatible motherboard. That's not hard to find. Many motherboards have LGA2011 socket. However, simulations I need to run require 128 gigs of RAM. Can you recommend a board which is not extremely expensive and meets the requirements? Thanks.

I asked my local hardware store about motherboards you recommended, they said that the boards only support 64 GB of RAM. Furthermore, I've been told that it's irrelevant because my CPU can't handle more than that. Is that true? Must I look for server motherboards and Xeons?

Yes 4930k support up to 64GB of memory
Link to intel spec for your cpu.

For such type of work would be your best bet xeon with server motherboard. Does can run such amount of ram and also you can use ram with buffers and ecc which provide lower rate of errors than classic ram and I guess would be better for precise simulations.
