Hi guys,

I’ve had an RTX 2080Ti for quite a few years now and I’m looking at upgrading possibly to an RTX 4070Ti. I’m just looking for recommendations and whether you think the 4070Ti is likely to be the best price to performance ratio? I did also look at the 4080 and 4090, but for what they cost at the moment I’m not so sure they are worth it.

Could someone also please check my below specs and see if I would need to upgrade anything to power a 4070Ti. I’m pretty sure I don’t, but not 100%:

Power supply: 850w
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5950x
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero

Looks like a pretyy good increase in FPS.

I have one, it's agreat gpu at 1440p but don't expect it to play all games at 4k.

Thanks for the info! And yeah currently I'm at 1440p so should have no issues. Would you say it's definitely worth getting the 4070Ti over the 4080 or 4090? Even though the performance is better on the latest two cards, I'm so sure that the price is worth paying for slightly better performance over the 4070Ti.

The best performance-to-price ratio in that performance class is completely owned by the RX 6950 XT.

TechPowerUp's GPU Database entry for the RX 6950 XT shows the RTX 4070 Ti to be all of 4% faster on average which is almost a statistical tie. Hell, I've seen different card models with the same GPU that have a bigger difference than that.

There are advantages to either card an only you can say which matters most to you.

Advantages for the RTX 4070 Ti:

1) The 4070 Ti will have much better performance with RT turned on than the 6950 XT. It's not that the 6950 XT is unusable with RT, but there's no question that the 4070 Ti will be much faster. If you care about RT performance, then this is definitely the card for you.

2) The TDP of the 4070 Ti is 50W lower than that of the 6950 XT. The TDP of the 6950 XT is 335W while the TDP of the 4070 Ti is 285W. This one probably doesn't matter because if you cared about power draw, you wouldn't already be looking at a card with a TDP of 285W.

3) If you employ professional graphics applications, you might need CUDA or you might use software that requires nVidia hardware. If that's the case, then the RTX 4070 Ti is the card for you. It's not like ATi hardware can't do this, it's just not nearly as good in most cases. If all you do is game or stream, then this isn't an advantage.

Advantages for the RX 6950 XT:

1) The 6950 XT has 16GB of VRAM while the 4070 Ti has only 12. It's not like the RTX 4070 Ti will be obsolete anytime soon (it's not like it has only 8GB) but the 6950 XT will definitely live longer. If you want your card to last as long as possible, this is the card for you. If you don't care about that and upgrade often, then this advantage doesn't apply to you.

2) The 4070 Ti is 33% more expensive despite being only 4% faster than the 6950 XT:
ASRock Radeon RX 6950 XT Phantom Gaming 16GB - $600
ASUS GeForce RTX 4070 Ti TUF 12GB - $800
For someone who has to save up for a video card, this difference is HUGE because there's always something else that the extra $200 (+whatever sales tax you pay) would be better spent on than a video card.

Unless ALL of the 4070 Ti's advantages apply to you, there's no question that the RX 6950 XT is the better buy, especially for someone who has to save up for a video card (like you and me both).

Theoretically, your PSU should be more than enough for any high-end card but that depends greatly on the make and model. If it's a recognised name like Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, BeQuiet!, Silverstone or Antec, you should be just fine.

Thanks a lot for the advice. If I were to go with an NVIDIA card, would you say the 4070Ti is the best pick for price to performance ratio when compared to the 4080 or 4090, or would you say it's worth paying extra for one of the latter two cards?

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the MSI Trio 4070Ti, do you think it’s likely to have similar performance to the ASUS TUF card?

Also is 12GB enough for 1440p gaming? I have a 2080Ti currently which has 11GB so assuming I won’t have any issues.
All the 4070 Ti cards are within a few frames of each other. 12GB is fine as long as you don't play horribly ported games such as The Last of Us and Star Wars Jedi Survivor. Both of those games were recently ported over from console and they did a horrible job of if.

Yeah I’ve been playing Jedi Survivor on my 2080 Ti and although I do get 50-60 in some places, it has dropped as low as 15 as well, which is ridiculous really, but as you said it’s extremely unoptimised at the moment.

So do you think the 4070 Ti is a good choice, or would you say it’s worth paying the extra for the 4080 or 4090? However the price increase is pretty significant.

The 4080 would give you more longevity but if it comes down to budget then the 4070 Ti. 4090 only if you game at 4K.

Would you say the 4080 is worth the extra 400+ though? Or is the 4070Ti a better buy? I guess it depends on the person and the budget, I’m just trying to get an idea of what’s likely to be the best buy to be honest.

That's a tough call tbh. The 4080 will have longevity going for it but again if it comes down to budget you gotta do what you gotta do.
How long is the 4080 likely to last compared to the 4070Ti? I got my 2080Ti in 2018 when it came out so it’s lasted around 5 years now. Would I be looking at similar longevity for both the 4070Ti and 4080 too?

That's another tough call tbh. It should last a long time at 1440P.
Ok thanks. I’m guessing with either choice though it’s still going to be a massive improvement from the now dated 2080Ti. Am I likely to have any disadvantages with the 4070Ti compared to my current card, or will it be a complete upgrade?

@Why_Me Also does it matter too much which model 4070Ti I get? Was looking at the MSI Gaming X Trio model, but not sure if there is a better one worth getting? The MSI one seems to be a good price.

All of those cards are within 2 - 3 frames per second of each other so I would go with the cheapest card between Asus, MSI and Gigabyte.
Sorry for all the questions, but do you think it’s definitely worth the upgrade to a 4070Ti from the 2080Ti, or do you think it’s best to just keep my current card for a while longer? Or bite the bullet and go for a 4080 or 4090?
