Hi all,

Here's a part list I've started: https://newegg.io/0766c28

Approximate Purchase Date: ~Black Friday

Budget Range: $1.500

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: (e.g.: CPU, mobo, RAM) **Include Power Supply Make & Model If Re-using**

Do you need to buy OS: Yes / No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg

It's about time to upgrade my rig and hoping to get some guidance on what I should purchase. My budget is ~$1,500 and I have an existing RTX 3060 I'd like to use if it won't bottleneck me too much. I'll take recommendations on any and all parts—but I especially don't really know what I'm looking for when it comes to a case, fans, cooler, or PSU.

Current rig: i7-7700K, 16GB ram, RTX 3060

Thanks in advance!

Your upgrade list doesn't include a PSU, are you recycling your unit? If so, what is the make and model of your current PSU and it's age? Storage wise, you will need to reinstall your OS, if you're recycling them as well.

In retrospect, you should stylize your thread like this;

Thanks for the advice! Just updated my post. Hope that helps.

Yeah I'm not sure what I need to know re: PSU, but more than likely will just buy a new one to be safe. Do I just need to make sure I cover my wattage?

Looks like everyone is recommending an i7–can you help me understand why that would be better over the newer generation? Is it that just cost to performance isn’t enough?

Would you recommend a 4070 also or would this only work with my existing 3060?

Finally, are cases universal or do I need something specific for mobos?

Thanks all, really appreciate this help.

Most will try to talk you out of an i9 unless you absolutely couldn't live with yourself, particularly for gaming.

An i-7 14700K would be very close to a 14900 and is more suitable for an air cooler.

"Gaming mostly"........in addition to what?
Gaming and some video editing in Adobe. Those are the two primary things but 99% gaming. I usually edit on my Mac.

The i9's are heat producing power hogs that aren't usually recommended for anything other than someone who does productivity for a living. Those cpu's are wanting a expensive board with sufficient VRM's, a 420 AIO and a case to fit said AIO. Those cpu's don't do much for gaming.

If your resolution is 1080P then the 3060 should do for now.

All you need is an ATX case for an ATX board. If you're looking for a case that's easy to build with and has excellent airflow that won't break the bank then this case is worth having a look at.

Would this change if I was looking for 4K?

your going to want a 7900xt 4070ti 4080 7900xtx if you want decent 4k at playable frame rates you can still pair them with a 13600k or 7700 and be good but thats going to bust your 1500 dollar budget !!
the 4060 and 7800 are still really 1080p and 1440p gaming gpu's !! ( maybe 4k low settings and upscaling )
