Looking for honest review of DII

I am thinking of skipping out of work a bit early today and picking up a
game or two. One of the games I have my eyes on is DII, and I have a couple
of questions before I pull out my debit card.

1 - The SP game (not online) as it stands with the expansions (which I
should be able to get as one big bundle): Is it worth it?

2 - The gameplay: I thoroughly enjoyed DI, the style of play, etc. Is DII
the same, how did the gameplay improve? Did it get worse in any way??

3 - When (if??) I get bored of the MMORPG I am currently playing, is it
worth going onto Battle.net to play?? I ask because I have heard horror
stories about griefing, hacking, etc that goes on. Is it actually as bad as
they say it is?

Thanks in advance.

If you want an unbiased opinion of D2 you've come to the wrong place. 🙂

Most of us here consider it at or near the top of their all time best games
list, I'd say.

Some people who loved D1 didn't really care for D2, although I'd say most
consider D2 a big improvement in most ways. Me--I *loathed* D1 and consider
D2 the best computer game of any stripe I've ever played--go figger.

Bnet's great with the right private group and for a beginner probably every
bit as bad or worse than you say with the random public group. There are
lots of great people to play with here and also in alt.games.diablo (which
despite its name is also a D2 group nowadays and one you'll also want to
check out). Some here also group with folks from the amazon basin,
(www.theamazonbasin.com) another good place to find reputable folks to play
with.

The only downside is that as long as the game's been around, you're catching
some of us on the downturn. But if you're just now getting started, you
might very well have at least four years of the best computer gaming you've
ever seen in front of you. 🙂

The caveat is that you have to enjoy tactical hack and slash, character
building, lots of great loot, seeing what's under the next rock, and
figuring out hundreds of different ways to get from "A" to "B". And if you
liked D1 then you probably do. 🙂

It is very much worth it.

I cant tell you ALL the ways it is different<better>, but just a few
improvements over classic D would be....faster walk/run, you cant get to
town much faster when you need to. More items to be found....I dont
remember what it is called, but the way the char moves in DII is soooo much
better, in classic D the char would only move on the angle<is that the
correct way to put it?> in DII the char can move in a smooth circle.

There are manny, many more diferences, to many to list.

Short answer...yes....but if ou get to know a few people that you can truset
and play in passworded games that is not a problem.

My opinion....try it, you'll like it!

Depending on where you buy it I know that around here the "Diablo II
Battlechest" goes for around $40. It included Diablo Classic, DII, DII LOD
and a guide that proved helpful to me (along with this newsgroup) on the
differences between the two.

The good side of Bnet...free online play....the bad side....free online
play....yes there are dupes/hacks/cheats around all the time. I tend to get
a list of folks together and play with them in passworded games.

As I am older than most of the people on BNet (I think), I tend to stray
from straight public games.

I never played the original Diablo so I can't really tell you the
differences between Diablo Classic and Diablo II. A friend of mine bought
DII while we were overseas in 2001 and I got hooked... :) So I can't
compare the differences in gameplay, aside from the screen resolution (which
helps on my laptop).

The SP game is really good to a point, and I use a game editor to look at
various builds (strafeazon, skellimancer, etc) before I go online and start
the character from scratch. I tend to play more with attributes and skill
points rather than equipment, because I don't know what I'll find/get
online...

Anyways, just my 2 cents for you.

Matt

Thanks to all that replied. From the sounds of it, I will enjoy it very
much and will be leaving work now to go pick it (and, if I can find it,
NWN) up. Once I finish supper tonight, I just might install it and try it
out.

Maybe I will cross paths with you online somewhere. Look for Moogli or
Cocotte.

Great! I'd help, but I haven't played anything but Hardcore in at least 3
years and I don't think you'll want to bite that off right now. 🙂

But don't hesitate to ask for help or questions. This group is still a
habit for a lot of us who don't have as much of the playing habit as we used
to, and IMO you'll be hard pressed to find people anywhere on usenet any
more willing or able to help than you'll find here--and at alt.games.diablo
as well, don't forget.

You'll have to pick a realm to play on online: USEast, USWest, Europe,
or Asia. I assume from your e-mail address that it'll be one of the
US ones.

Of course you'll be starting in softcore. (Some of us never stopped.)

And then you'll have to decide whether to play on the ladder or
non-ladder. Most people play on the ladder, where you have access to
some better items and such, but the monsters are a little smarter, so
it's a little harder. Or so I hear, having never bothered to start
over again on the ladder.

If you decide on USEast/softcore/nonladder, then I'd be happy to help
out.

If you need anything, just look me up... I'm on USEast (both ladder and non
ladder) and the account name is msmith1997. I have tons of stuff that I
hoard and can give you some stuff if you need it....

If you can get it cheap id say definitly.

C2 has more different looking areas, more different acting monsters (so more
strategies), more items, mercenaries (private tanks), more classes, and
subclasses.

Yes, but even more so if you have some friends to play with regularly.
Unless your char is uber, your going to have a lot of problems making it
through hell solo.

Id rate d2 as one of the best games ever. Totaly addictive.

NWN is also an ecxellent game, tho not as good as d2 IMO.
I had much find playing in public games on the "nordock" module. Check it
out.
Cleric is an easy char to solo or group. At high levels the summoned
elementals kick major ass.
(esp if you take "animal" ability when you create char)
Make sure to get a merc from the guy at east end of town.

I can attest to that. I have not yet found people to play with, so it's
just my sorceress and her merc. She just finished Act IV, so she is on her
way to earning the title of Matriarch. And I do mean earning. 🙂

> Id rate d2 as one of the best games ever. Totaly addictive.

Of course, I agree. I think that the most attractive thing about D2 is its
layered depth. You can play the game over and over again finding and doing
new things every time.

Archived from groups: alt.games.diablo2 (More info?)

As an almost pure single-player player, I could say this (but it is just a
personal opinion ofcourse) :

I played Diablo 1 four times: once to get the feeling and then again once
for each character type.
It was enjoyable, addictive, good graphics, immersive and sometimes even
funny (dialogs with some of the baddies).

Diablo 2 misses the funny part but the graphics are still good, gameplay is
good, the skills system makes it very interesting.
I don't know if you could call this game addictive... haven't been playing
this game much, just about four years now, only two or three times each and
every week, lol. (getting less now)
One thing though, the fun is to try to play every character in every
combination possible, a fire sorc, a cold sorc, a melee sorc, barbarian with
axe, barbarian with sword and so on and on and on... but doing the same
character through all three difficulties is getting a bit boring.

Personally, I think you could start playing your first single player game
normal, just to see how the game runs, how to handle the skills and so on
but after a few tries you will notice that the game is way too easy in the
first difficulty level (that is, with the LOD add-on).
If you want to have a serious challenge playing SP, you should try the
'/players8' option.
This makes the game act as if there were eight players in the game and since
the monsters attributes are increased accordingly to the number of players,
this makes it far more challenging and rewarding.

I do think however, that diablo 2 could have been more SP if they did
include some special items on key-locations as they did in diablo 1.
Now, every item drop is purely based on stats and luck. Then again.. this
makes you do the same level over and over again just to find another
bigger/better weapon or armor, still saying 'no I am *not* addicted to your
friends'...... as if they still believe that after four years....... not! :)

And yes: the add-ons are worth it!

regards,
revom

Well, I did end up picking up both DII and NWN. I am also firmly enraptured
by CoH right now. FOr the moment, any play of DII will, more than likely,
be single player to get the hang of things, get some experience with the
interface, the battles, that sort of thing. Once I get experienced, I will
definately be looking people up.

Naah. Not sure if I could handle going from the nice confines of Paragon
City and the hospital to lag, oops, dead, start over again.

Yeah. The maturity level in here seems to be lightyears ahead of those that
I see on the battle.net forums. Not to mention that people in here can
actually use all the keys on their keyboard...

More than likely it will be US East that I pick. I live in Ottawa, so I
assume it would be the best one for me when it comes to lag and stuff.

Definately. Like I mentioned in my reply to Chainbreaker, I am far too used
to the no permadeath in City of Heroes to just go right away to the
complete opposite style of gameplay.

Well, I managed to get the Diable battle Chest (D, DII, DII:LoD, and the
Strategy Guide) for $50.00 (Cdn). Pretty decent price, IMO.
