Hey hey

I'm going to build my roommate a new system. I'm looking at a P4 2.8 (Prescott) 512mb Corsair XMS DDR400, 80-120gb SATA hd, nvidia 5900xt
Sadly, this is my first intel system, I've built dozens of AMD rigs.. I haven't been following Intel chipsets very well. So I don't know what mobo to pick out. Looking for something in the $80-120 price range that will do good with all the hardware i listed. I'd prefer Asus or Gigabyte as I've had great luck with them in past AMD setups.

Your best value is the Abit IS7. It has lots of features and great performance for around $90.

looked at one on Abit IS7-E Zipzoomfly.. $90 says its prescott ready, I take it that I can pop the 2.8 in and not hafta' worry bout flashing the bios or anything?
Also, what PS would you recommend? I was thinking about Antec True430watt...

I prefer the IS7 over the IS7-Economy. It has a couple more features for a $10 price difference.

I'd probably go with a Fortron Source 400W.

Are you sure he wants a scotty and not a P4c? There are heat and power issues with the P4e.

I have to second Endyen. Considering the videocard you are plugging it, it looks like you're building a gaming rig. A 2.8C northwood would be a better choice then. Its faster in most games, and much cooler to boot. Price ought to be roughly equal.

I'd also consider a A64 2800+. Its about the same price, adds AMD64, NX, and cool and quiet, but there is not many benchmarks around yet to determine how it performs. I'm guessing it will be roughly on par with the P4 2.8E.

I didnt know Scotty hard heat issues... I was tempted by the larger cache on scott vs northwood..
But hey, I'll look into P4c now =)

I guess they advertise the bigger cache and "SSE3", but not the 50% longer pipeline crippeling performance, or the 20% higher power consumption.

If, as has been suggested, this is a gaming system, are you taking suggestions for video card as well as mobo? There is nothing wrong with the 5900xt, and it (in 128mb flavor) is priced with its performance, and rocks in older games, but for only just over $200, only $30 more, you can pick up a sweet 9800pro that will be better.

If 30 bucks isnt too big of a deal I would second the notion of a Radeon 9800Pro. ATi generally has better visual quality and the 9800Pro is a sweet card. The P4 2.8C is a much better choice than the 2.8E. Better performance, less power consumption, less heat, what else could you ask for. An athlon 64 would be a good gaming choice especially considering it has support for x86-64. However if you had your heart set on a P4 then grab the P4 2.8C. Its a very fast CPU.

The only reason I was thinking about a 5900xt for him was...
He wants to play SplinterCell/Pandora Tomorrow more than anything else.
I've seen SC on a few different ATi systems and something about the game and how it uses lighting.. seems like the shadows/lights cast better on an nvidia rig
