So my mom is in the market for a new laptop because hers is out on the fritz. She doesn't do any gaming but uses it for a lot of very CPU intensive tasks like opening and reading large presentation files, for instance. The budget is around $1K but could go higher. We're looking to buy as soon as possible to take advantage of Back To School sales. The usual suspects are fine - HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Gigabyte. Though I have been trying to convince her to buy the Surface Laptop for the Ryzen 4980U CPU, which is better than the Intel equivalent. That said:

1. What is your budget?

$1000 but can go higher / lower depending on the configuration.

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

15.6", no more, no less.

3. What screen resolution do you want?

1080P minimum

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?

Portable, the lighter the better. Something along the lines of a Surface laptop, LG Gram, Samsung Galaxy Book, or Lenovo Yoga would be the best.

5. How much battery life do you need?

As much as possible.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

No, no gaming on this laptop.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)

Light photo and video editing, viewing large presentation files, general web browsing, streaming, etc.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?

512GB minimum, 1TB preferable.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

Anything is fine - Newegg (if legitimate), Amazon (if legitimate), Best Buy, direct from manufacturer, Micro Center, etc.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?

4 years minimum

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

Have external, not required.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

Preferred brands - pretty much anything - Microsoft, HP, Lenovo, Sager, Gigabyte, Samsung, MSI, etc.
Brands not preferred - Dell, Asus, Apple

13. What country do you live in?

USA - California (have access to Micro Center)

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

Would prefer AMD Ryzen CPU over Intel if possible, but flexible in CPU choices. Need at least one HDMI and/or USB-C port for external monitor hookup.

That HP looks decent, I'm hesitant to buy from Amazon because they sell so much garbage and refurbished crap. But I want thinner than that. Something like the Surface Laptop: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/surface-laptop-4/946627fb12t1?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Or the HP Spectre X360: https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/mdp/laptops/hp-spectre-x360-15#!&tab=features

Thinner laptops cost more.
The Surface Laptop 4 15" inch starts at $1.3K (8GB RAM/256GB SSD) and the HP Spectre x360 15" will set you back $1.4K (16GB RAM/512GB SSD) .

Maybe you could drop by Micro Center and check the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro...very light at just 2.4 lbs. $1.2k
Core i7 11th Gen 1165G7 , 16GB RAM & 512GB

I have seen the Dell Inspiron 15 with with Intel Core i7-11370H ($950) or AMD Ryzen 7 5700U ($800) 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD and 1080P screen.
A pound heavier 3.62 lbs.

Yeah I'm aware of that. I'm looking for thin and light because my mom has had shoulder issues and doesn't want to lug a heavy laptop around, which is why the lighter laptop is preferable.

I do like that Dell laptop even though I've never really been a fan of Dell in general.

Maybe you should go for a smaller 13" or 14" laptop...such as the Acer 14" Swift X SFX14 at just 3 lbs.

The only Dell laptops I would recommend are the Inspiron 5000/7000 series, XPS and Latitude.
The 2020 XPS (first release) had an issue with the touchpad but it was fixed later on.

I just saw several laptops when shopping for school supplies. Samsung models were on sale.

Lenovo IdeaPad 5i.
15.6" at just 3.6 lbs.
It comes with either 8GB or 16GB soldered, so you won't be able to upgrade it.

Lenovo IdeaPad 5i Pro 16"
At 4.4 lbs. with a Core i5-11300H CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB M.2 SSD and a QHD (2560 x 1600) Display.

Samsung Galaxy Book Pro $750
2.3 lbs., 15.6" with Core i7-1165G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD

Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 $950
3.1 lbs., 15.6" with Core i7-1165G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD

Both Samsung laptops had a lot crap ( bloatware), so I would remove all of it.
If you have a Samsung phone you could keep the apps that hast some integration built in.
