with plenty of character customisation

elder scrolls arena, daggerfall, morrowind and skyrim and fable 2 and 3 (i dont like the character customisation for fable 3 :/ it kinda sucks)
could someone recomend a good open world rpg with lots of character customisation (and lets not be forgetting mods 😱) thats not in that list? (pc games prefered i do have an xbox 360 but its completely borked atm and i do not have a ps3 or nintendo wii - altho i can play wii games on my computer with emulators)

I would suggest you to try out some MMO-rpgs such as world of warcraft, rift and star wars the old republic. These games are much more social than single RPG's. It's what you prefer but it gives another dimension to RPG's in my opinion. They are all for pc.

Deadly Premonition - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadly_Premonition. More horror survival with puzzle solving, but really enjoyed it. Felt like I was playing Twin Peaks.

Edit - Sorry, this is a 360 or PS3 game. My bad.

should of added the mmo's i play D:
runescape
wow (i just got into beta today 😀)
fiesta
and AQ worlds

@redmar 2 is good 3 is complete and utter rubbish i only got it because someone told me lies and said you get to kill the reaver :/ sadly you dont
one problem i so have with fable two is that after a bit you get every person who sees you as a possible spouse after you despite you not doing anything towards them and while you are with your husband/wife
and then if i go on a rampage in one town its like i have been on a rampage in every town 🙁

isnt the witcher two open world rpg?

I would recommend Guild Wars 2 because that game will be a one payment game. So you will get the mmorpg experience for the same price as buying an rpg.

if you want more story rather than action,
Dragon age origins + awakening, if u prefer rpgs with swords and magic and bows
Dragon age 2(much duller than DA O, get DA O first)
mass effect series, if you like guns
Kingdom of amalur

I am not sure if witcher 2 is considered fully openworld. But you may try.

If you want openworld as in similar to elderscrolls/fall out, try them. I recommend Morrowind, best elderscrolls game. Skyrim is alright but it has many things lacking in terms of rpg elements. Fallout 3 is a mad game, you should try it too. Blow those abominations up.

i wouldnt consider DA or ME to be " open world" persay.
witcher 2 isnt considered an open world rpg, but is well worth the trip especially if you have the hardware to handle it

Dragon Age and Mass Effect series are definitely not open world. No random encounters, and no way to mod the game to add more content. The entire game is more or less scripted. They are good games, but the game play is nowhere near any of Bethesda's games. My favorite Bethesda games are Morrowind and Fallout 3; in that order.

there's random encounters in dragon age origins. I think there's even random encounters in DA2, but much less noticeable

witcher 2 is amazing to say the least

divine divinity
divine divinity 2
risen
risen 2
fallout new vegas
sacred
scared 2
fallout 3
magika not sure about this one though

Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning, Stalker Call of Pripyat , and Two Worlds 2 . Witcher 2 , Divinity II, and also Risen are excellent choices.

Kingdoms has a lot going for it but the story line is a bit lame. Witcher 2 FTW!!!!

Dragon Age Origins is anything but scripted, one of the finer RPGs I've played but it is definitely not open world. Divinity is poorly programmed. I started playing two worlds 2 and it was a surprising game. It's beautiful, combat is fun, and it even got a game of the year through some small company. I'll get back to that after I beat my 3rd Dragon Age Playthrough and then beat awakenings.

I hate post apocalyptic but Fallout 3 did it for me.

Another person said to play Witcher 2 if you have the rig to run it but before I built my newest computers I beat it on my Asus G73 laptop on medium settings, still looked beautiful.

If you really want to enjoy some of the best storyline ever, get an emulator and play Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, one of the greatest video game stories ever.

Rift was good for a minute, Tera has an open Beta Test atm so you could test it and see if you like it. Aion / Dungeons & Dragons Online / Everquest 2. Aion and Eq2 both have a lovely open world and free to play.

isn't that the soul reaver series? strange that they renamed it to blood omen...

Ya but Soul Reaver actually came out after Blood Omen.

The series was released in the following order:

1.) Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
2.) Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
3.) Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2
4.) Blood Omen 2: Legacy of Kain
5.) Legacy of Kain: Defiance
