I'm building a system. AMD 3970x, 2 GPU 2070 super, AsRock Creator MB, SSD's, 2 Mechanical Drives.

What would be a good PSU for that system?

Keep in mind, however, that unless you have a very specific workstation use in mind, a multi-GPU solution in 2020 is a pointless, awful choice that flushes hundreds of dollars down the toilet and shouldn't be even given a second thought.

If you are pushing both the 3970X and the 2070 Super to their absolute max performance at the same time, you could see upwards of 650+W of power consumption (varying on the model GPU).

The 3970X draws about 100-130 at idle and 400-430W at max.
While the 2070 Super draws about 40-60w idle and 200-300 max (again varying on model).

So on the safe side I would go with an 850W gold+ rated PSU or above. Options I recommend:

According to Nvidia each card draws 215w but let's round up to 250w to account for spikes or factory oc cards.

According to anandtech the 3970x draws 290w maximum but I'd round up to 315w to account for spikes, avx or other things.

I would add 100w for everything else.

(2x250)+315+100=915

I would estimate you would need a 1000w PSU.

850w might cut it, but I would prefer 100W with such CPU and gpus.

Here's one

I'm not using it for gaming. I'll be using it for GPU rendering using VRay, Redshit etc. As far as I understand the renderers will use as many GPU's as you can fit in your box.

Huzzah, you've got the very specific workstation use in mind! You wouldn't believe how many people want to do multi-GPU solutions for gaming rigs (which are the majority) in 2020.
