I have an HP Pavillion m9250F with quad core Q6700 processors and Win7 that has worked fine for years. The graphics card became flaky - resetting every few minutes and sometimes BSOD. I got a Radeon HD5450 and that fixed the resetting problem, but now the computer is very slow for any screen changes. Almost as slow as Win XP was (I still run XP on a laptop). I think I will return the HD5450, but is there another decent graphics card that will replace the NVIDIA?
It must fit in one slot and have an HDMI output.
I am not a gamer, so extreme performance is not necessary.
Thanks for any advice.

Solution

Yes that should work.
go to Newegg.com or somewhere similar.
refine a search for PCIe desktop graphics cards. 1GB VRAM, less than $75, HDMI out, etc.

though you may find that it isn't the GPU causing the issues. you appear to have been having trouble with both cards so it could very well be a multitude of things causing your issue. motherboard could be going bad, a Windows corruption issue, PSU could be going bad, RAM could be going bad.
it may just be time to upgrade to a more modern setup all around f the new card doesn't fix the problem.

True, but he would have a decent GPU whenever the rest of the rig gets updated, someday. The 750 would indeed be sufficient.

Sorry for the delay in responding - electrical poer problems. Thanks for the suggestions. The Nividia GTX 750ti is 2 slots wide, so it won't fit. I think it is also pci express 3.0 an my slot is pci expre4ss X16, so that is probably also incompatible.

As far as having problems with both card: The original Nvidia GeForce 8600 HD has 2 bulging capacitors which probably killed it. The Radeon HD5450 works like I said earlier, but seems slow and I am getting odd errors popping up with things like my GPU is not mapped and OpenGL cannot be found which leads me to think it is incompatible in some way.

How about the Geforce GT 730 2GB DDR3 PCI Expressx16 card? It seems OK to me.

Thanks again.

Yes that should work.

Solution
Thanks for everyone's help. I installed an EVGA GeForce GT 730 and it is working fine. Easy to install both the card and the software. Graphics is much faster. FYI: the windows performance score with the original GEForce 8600 was 5.4, with the Radeon 5450 it was 4.7, with the GeForce GT 730 it is 7.7.

Thanks again. I think we can close this item.
