Looking for Safe I7 920 OC Help - ASUS P6T

So I have limited overclocking experience. I have messed around with some old C2D but nothing extreme.

I would like to know the best way to get my new I7 920 to 3.5-3.6 easily and sagely. I just want a rock solid OC.

I've read the bit-tech guide and will probably use that as a guideline, but I don't even need to go that high. So just some recomended settings achieve the 3.5-3.6 would be perfect for me.

Go into the Bios, Going to AI tweaker, switch to manual, turn turbo off, up the block multiplier in incremets of 2 or 3, save changes,and reboot. Repea,switch the block multipier again by two or 3 and reboot each time. Run Prime 95 for one hour to test for errors and download realtemp program to observe your temps to see if they are safe. both program are free. This is what i did with my system with no voltage changes, althought I have a Cooler Master V8 that helped me do this. I know I can go further but I always had done safe overclocking as opposed to extreme overclocking. I would not go past 3.2 until running Prime95 for erros. Good luck!

I set the block multiplier to 190. Set AI tweaker to manual, and turned off Turbo as well. This Gave me a processor speed for 3.8! Mind you I watched my cpu temp climb to 70C idle. I'm picking up the Cooler Master v8 today. I got an Asus P6T with the i7 920. I got the settings from this guy. Check out his video.

Thats great bro! Yeah 70C is way hot!!! That video you sent me was very informative and shows you how easy it is to overclock with the Asus PT6. Good post! Let me know how the temps turn out with the V8.

Thanks man. I got the v8 hooked up. First of all, it's huge, even for my Cooler Master Cosmos 1000. I had to yank the whole mobo out too to put the back plate in place for the cooler too. As for performance, I set my BCLK frequency to 185, which gives me 3.7GHz, and an idle temp of 41-43C. I'm happy with it.

That idle temp is great for a sizeable overclock. Yeah that V8 is HUGE! Mine idles at 38C and full load at 49C, sometimes 52C full load depending on the game. Plus my overclock is small compared to yours. In the future I might take it higher, but for know 3.4ghz is better than 2.93ghz for my 940. Anyways I gather your full load temps to be around 52C to 58C which is very respectable for a sweet overclock. Good job, take care. I'll let you when I decide to take mine further with my 940.

How I did it:
Put all multipliers to the lowest possible
for me that was 12 CPU
6 for memory
and 36 for QPI
Voltages vary, my "stock" volt was 1.34 or something but that was way to high, so I gave it only 1.25. I raised the baseclock from 133 to around 160 and later 180 step by step to see if it could have the baseclock.
It worked, then I raised the CPU multiplier->benchrun
if thats stable then raise the memory multiplier.
QPI multiplier can be left alone at its lowest value.
Got my 920i at 3.4ghz with stock cooler now, Idle temps of 40 and loaded at ~78
Hope it helps you, if it doesnt then just keep reading guides. I read around 8 of them before I was confident enough to overclock.

I have my core i7 920 running @ 3.5ghz and my 3GB of DDR3 memory @ 1355mhz with an idle temp of 35c and with full load on all 4 processors for 15 minutes I max at around 70c. I did it the easy way, like he shows in the video. Its rock solid, I play CODWAW, Crysis, COD4,Farcry2 for hours with no problems.

Just wanted to give a heads up I'm still running stable with the settings I mentioned before: (shown in the video):

BCLCK frequency 190
DRAM Frequency 1523MHz
CPU Voltage 1.35
DRAM Bus Voltage 1.66 (ignore warning)

I'm indeed rock solid at 3.8GHz, and 12GB of RAM. P6T with the i7 920.

UPDATE: Above settings are unstable for me now. When I run Prime95 I hear a high frequency continuous tone, and eventually the system becomes unstable. I decided to go with the middle of the road OC settings outlined in another Tom articlle:

So I just OC'd my machine; and I did the above it was running at 3.8
When I ran 3dMark Vantage it became unstable.

Do these settings make any account for only 6gb DDR3 ram?

Also; what is a good operating temperature? When I oc its about 100-110f

Right now, I have it running at 3.59gzh and its putting out
Core Temp 0.99.4
Core 1: 109f
Core 2: 108f
Core 3: 102f
Core 3: 104f

PC Probe:

CPU: 59c
MB: 47c

I am running the Zalman cooler and have 2 220mm case fans
putting air out,
and 2 120mm case fans pulling air in.

Plus the Zalman, plus there is a 120mm case fan on the back pushing out.

I've been meaning to post back on my settings. It appears they have become unstable for me as well. When I run Prime95 I get a high frequency tone coming from the system. The sound Is difficult to isolate, and eventually the system becomes unstable. Instead, I've been following the settings recommended in another Tomshardware posting:

I went with 3.33GHz, and set my memory at 1300+.

So far it's stable under stress, and temps are fine.

I'm back again, with even better OC tweak which appear to be running fine. The big difference is I changed the CPU multiplier from 20 to 19, dropped the voltage requirements (great improvement on heat reduction), and the RAM is now set to 1603!
