Hello community,

As far as I know, the Cherry MX Brown switches are the quiet ones for mechanical keyboards. What other switches are slient as well? I am looking for mechanical keyboards that is slient, I tried the Razer Blackwidow at Best Buy, but I just can't stand its loud sound overtime of it's blue switches. Anyone recommends a good mechanical keyboard (better if illuminated), that is not that too expensive? Thanks.

If it's just for typing, then the Das Keyboard Model S Ultimate Soft Tactile Mechanical Keyboard. It's not illuminated. It doesn't even have key inscriptions. So unless you type via sight instead of touch, this is a great keyboard. I use it and it's amazingly silent and soft.

the quiet ones I've found all tend to be USB. Some are fairly decent, but are sometimes dodgy on the NKRO. it's either deal with a little noise, or switch to a USB 16KRO. I've seen some that work almost like the Mac anodized aluminum keyboards. chicklet style keys, that are very quiet. But then you're moving away from the general desired use of a mechanical keyboard -That indication that you've actually pressed the key.

I should also state that quiet can be very relative. I've used some VERY noisy keyboards, and some virtually silent keyboards. From personal experience, the Noppoo Choc Mini 84 is fairly quiet ( http://www.amazon.com/Noppoo-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard-Cherry-Switches/dp/B00A45WJZA ), but it lacks a 10-key pad and has a compact feel like you're using a laptop keyboard. If you need a full size keyboard, the Ione Scorpius M10 ( http://www.amazon.com/Black-Mechanical-Keyboard-Wired-Adapter/dp/B000ZD1L14 ) would probably do the trick. It's a bit noisier than the Noppoo, IMHO. The noise on either, never bothered me. However, the Scorpius sometimes only picks up 6 keys with USB connection. If it's connected via PS2, it's full NKRO.

Again, please note that the feature of a 'ping' when pressing a key, generally desired with mechanical keyboards. Once again, "noise" is a relative term for these keyboards.

If you're still a bit unsure about choosing a mechanical keyboard that's fairly quiet, go to the following guide: http://www.overclock.net/t/491752/mechanical-keyboard-guide

If you scroll down to "Common Switch Types", you'll see why some switches would be quieter or noisier. Personal experience has shown me that Cherry MX Red switches are the quietest. I haven't used Topre switch style keyboards because they're a bit pricey for keyboards. I've heard, they're pretty quiet, but have not used them, myself. You'll probably want to stay away from anything that says buckling spring. Those are the noisiest.
